I wasn’t surprised. I mean I knew that being bit by an alpha kind of meant that I was going to become a werewolf whether I like it or not. I knew this would happen but it didn’t make me any less scared. But I had to be brave in front of Derek, in front of the pack. They can’t see me like this. I exhaled slowly. Derek looked at me with concerned eyes.

“Shay, you know that you can let go,” He was so convincing, “You don’t have to be strong in front of me. You don’t have to prove anything to me. You are the strongest, most beautiful girl I have ever met. I love you and nothing you can do will change that.” Hearing that I let the strength leave my body and I slumped against Derek. His arms wrapped around me and he lay next to me, keeping me close. I didn’t cry or anything. I just let him hold me. After a long silence I whispered,

“Derek for the first time I am terrified of myself.” Derek buried his nose in my hair.

“I’m going to help you Shay. I am going to be there when you shift at the full moon... and if you let me. I will be your alpha.” I turned my head and looked at Derek. His expression was guarded.

“I’m going to be a pain in the ass and I’m going to need you more than ever you know that right?” Derek nodded. “Then yes… alpha.” I teased him. Derek rolled his eyes and lightly pressed his lips to mine.

“I’m going to go find the doctor and the pups. You stay here ok?” Now it was my turn to roll my eyes.

“Right because I am totally going somewhere.” Derek just shook his head and walked out the door. I thought about the coming weeks and how I was going to change. I was so scared but I knew that Derek and the pack would be right there with me.

Over the past two weeks I was discharged from the hospital and taken to the pack house. Will, Isaac, and Scott had cleaned up our old house and with Cora’s uncle Peter; we were going to sell it. Tonight was the full moon and I had all but locked myself in my room. I knew that as soon as the sun set Derek and Scott would be taking me to the old train car where Isaac, Boyd, and Erica had spent their first full moon. I knew about how wolves had anchors that kept them under control during the full moon. Scott’s for example, was Allison. Isaac’s was his father before he had gone nuts and started abusing him. I figured the Boyd and Erica’s was each other since they had found each other when they were in a very bad place in their lives. I had tried to think of what could possibly be my anchor but nothing had come to me. I wasn’t hungry, I wasn’t thirsty, it was like a was in a sort of trance. But as Cora stepped through my bedroom door I snapped out of it and followed her down the staircase.

I knew I looked horrible. I didn’t even think to brush my hair this morning. Why did it matter? Derek had chosen Scott to help him tonight for a couple of reasons. Scott had the most control over himself on the full moon because even though Cora had been a wolf longer, Scott had a stronger anchor. Everyone else was locking themselves up tonight in the basement and the cellar of the pack house. Scott was also smart when he shifted, he had a plan and he was clever. We were driving down to the train car and Scott sat in the back with me. He helped me stay there in the moment. Derek constantly was looking the in mirror back at us and he kept driving faster and faster every time he did. Derek parked the Camaro and I got out of the car slowly. Derek and Scott were on either side of me as we walked down into the darkness.
