I stood very still. I knew he felt and heard my heart speed up and my breathing turn shallow.

“I thought I would go home. Make sure the house was fine and that my dad hadn’t destroyed everything yet.” I said slowly. I looked up at Derek. I don’t think he meant to show it but there was a look of disappointment behind his eyes. “But,” I whispered, “I changed my mind. I’m going to stay here. Make sure these idiots aren’t being well idiots.” I blushed slightly and Derek grinned. He tugged my hand, pulling me towards the stairs leading up.

“Come on. I’ll lend you some of my stuff.”

Derek had given me one of his small t-shirts and a pair of sweatpants that I had to roll up multiple times so I didn’t trip. Derek had a couch in his room and had offered me the bed. I had protested but he just kept pushing. I sunk into Derek’s bed and wrapped myself in the sheets. Everything smelled like him. A musky pine wood scent. I loved it. I tried to fall asleep, but I just couldn’t. I whispered into the dark,

“Derek?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you still awake?” I could hear the eye roll he sent my way. I grinned. I stepped out of the bed and onto the floor. Padding towards Derek quietly I slipped under the blanket he had pulled over himself. He slept with pants on thank god. But he was shirtless. Derek didn’t seem surprised when I crawled in with him. His arm slipped around my waist and pulled me closer to him. Our legs tangled together and I pressed my back into his chest. It felt so natural and so right. I fell asleep listening to the sound of his heart beat, slow and steady. Slow and steady.

NEXT MORNING

I yawned and opened my eyes. Light flooded Derek’s bedroom and set a warm glow about everything. I smiled and tilted my head to the side. Derek was still asleep. He looked so peaceful. There were no lines of worry or stress. I slowly started to untangle our legs. I gently pushed Derek’s arm off and slipped out. I put on my shirt from the other day and pulled one of Derek’s sweatshirts from his closet. I put my hair into a messy bun and padded down to the kitchen. I heard tow or three people moving around the kitchen. I turned the corner and saw Scott, Isaac, and Cora awake. Their backs were to me and Scott turned around looking at the newspaper.

“Hey Der-“ Scott looked up from the newspaper. I gave him a confused look. “You smelled like Derek.” Scott explained. I looked down at the to big sweatshirt and pants. I gave Scott a sheepish look.

“I guess the clothes explain the scent?” I blushed profusely and Scott, Isaac, and Cora grinned at me. I slipped in to one of the bar stools by the island. I looked at Isaac slyly. “So Isaac,” I asked with a grin, “ When are you going to ask my sister out?” Isaac spit out his drink. I laughed whole heartedly as he sputtered.

“What makes you think I want to ask her out?” He finally choked out.

“The way you look at her… It’s the same way that,” That Derek looks at me I thought silently, “It’s the way people look at each other when their in love. Like a lost puppy. In your case it might be literal.” Cora giggled and Scott continued to read the paper. This is what family is, I thought. A home is a place where you feel safe and at home with those around you. This is a pack.
