Memories of the past

Remember when you kissed me,
as if my lips held the oxygen you needed to breathe?
And I'd cling to you as if you would disappear if I didn't.
Remember when you held me,
as if your arms were the safest place for me
And I sought the comfort of them often
Remember the way you'd touch me,
always gently,
as if you thought I'd break like glass
My name from your lips
whispered for only mine and God's
ears to hear
And your name fell from my lips
like Amen after a prayer is spoken
When I was your happiness
And you were my reason to live
When I was your life
And you were saving mine
Remember how you'd stare into my eyes
And the world around us would disappear
Remember a simpler time
When we held each other's hearts
in trembling hands
And we loved more deeply than ever imagined
I often go back there
My secret oasis
When the world around me is too much to bear
You go to bed every night
and she,  not I, lies beside you
And I sleep alone
Doomed to relive these memories
