Once I reached my destination I stopped, wheezing to catch my breath as it is quite a distance to the edge of our... Their pack territory to the shack.
I hadn't visited it for years as the Alpha forbid anyone from going near the border in fear of a rogue attack.
The shack was worse... more ruined than I remembered. The roof was green with moss and lichen caved in to the side, the dark cracked windows had an eerie sense to them and dirt and ivy clung to the outer walls of the rotting wood. The unkempt undergrowth made it look as if the shack had grown up from the very earth it lay, I could only imagine what state the inside was in.
Before I settled I decided to scout the area keeping an eye out for danger and hopefully coming across so some food.
I trudged my way through the forests thick undergrowth leaving a trail of flattened plants and snapped twigs behind me, not that I particularly care because I highly doubt anyone would bother wasting their time chasing after me.
It was nearing dark and I've been stomping through the dense forest for nearly four hours now and all I've managed to find is some questionable mushrooms, which I chose to leave behind as I didn't want to risk eating a poisonous one, I began heading back to the shack and I saw something move to my left. I froze in my spot and a small brown rabbit hopped out ear pointed and nose twitching, it wouldn't be much but it would sustain me for the night before I went back to the pack house the following morning after the day's events had calmed down and been forgotten.
While I was pondering my thoughts thinking of how I could possibly manage to catch this rabbit I accidentally put weight down on my front foot causing a twig to leave loudly snap. I internally cringed as the rabbit snapped it's head up and began to bound away from me.
Instinctively I snapped my hand out, fast as lightning and managed to miraculously catch the small rabbit. I couldn't believe it I've never done anything so quickly and accurately in my life, I bet Dylan wouldn't even been able to react as quickly as I did just then.
Broken from my thoughts due to the rabbit squirming in my hands desperate to escape I swiftly ended it with a quick snap.
I made my way back to the shack, collecting some dry twigs and a few small logs on the way to start a small fire to cook my prize.
I made my way inside and the walls were grey with long streaks of black mold running down the walls were I'm sure many damp nights had sept in. The floor was lined in dust and littered with flaking speckles of paint.
The disused wooden furniture, rotting and stained with lichen. The tattered, moth eaten curtains hung limp. A still heavy feeling fell in the dark room and I half expected a ghost to rise from the worn wooden flooring.
Well I better get to it then, I located the hole in the roof so that it acts as a chimney for the smoke the fire will release. I began to pile the twigs in a teepee style shape and placed some dry leaves and undergrowth underneath as a fire starter, before I added my bigger logs, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a box of matches I grabbed on my way out of the pack house as I knew I would need to light a fire like many times before.
The rabbit didn't take long to cook. It wasn't the best meal I've ever had but it was food. I skinned and gutted it while I was waiting for the fire to grow in size and be me a suitable temperature to cook my meal.
I had since gotten a stomach ache which I believe is from eating the rabbit so I have a feeling tonight will be a long uncomfortable night.
