During my internal debate, I hadn’t realised that the front door had opened, or that there had been a figure watching me. It wasn’t until I had started to pat down my jeans to wiggle out the car keys that the voice spoke.
‘You alright?’ questioned what can only be described as a Greek God. Before I could get round to blatantly ogling him, my eyes became transfixed on the mysterious mans eyes. They were so piercing; it was as if he saw right through me. I quickly abandoned the search for my car keys and instead wrapped my cardigan around me, in the vain hope that the mystery man had not seen everything that had just happened, and that he did not think I was indeed a fat cow.
‘Yeah, no, I’m fine. Just going to make my way home,’ I plastered on a smile and bobbed my head. Guys did the head bobbing thing all the time, I just hoped it was enough of an acknowledgement for the God to leave me alone so I could crawl into bed and never come out.
‘In this weather? I think you’d be better off waiting it out for twenty minutes at least. Besides there is a girl, Jamie I think, who’s looking for you,’ shrugged the mysterious man, diving his hands into his pockets. He moved sideways, indicating that he wanted me to step into the house. My chest tightened. Was there enough room there for me to stand further away from him without our bodies touching? Sucking in a lung full of air, I tentatively stepped into the house.
‘You cold or..?’ questioned the man who was dragging me back into hell.
‘I’m fine, lead the way’ I whispered as I held myself together; praying that the cow man had gone. Obviously I was freezing but I couldn’t admit that. I was a big girl, surely I had enough blubber to keep me warm, that’s what polar bears do isn’t it? What if he had offered me an item of clothing and it didn’t fit? I could quite possibly die then and there.
It was odd. Once the Greek God started to walk through the crowded room, people made way for him. He was like Mosses, parting the sea. At this though, I smirked, and dutifully followed along with my head down to avoid trouble and to not embarrass the Greek God. He was probably already embarrassed enough at having to come and fetch me to pick up Jamie. No man would’ve left Jamie’s side willingly to fetch me. He must’ve been tricked into think I’d be hot like Jamie, which is why he sought me out. I noticed we had made our way over to the table that had lots of cups on it.
‘She was here, but I’m not sure where she is now Evelyn,’ apologized the mysterious man as he scanned the room in a effort to locate Jamie. I, however, was preoccupied with the fact that he had known my name. Oh no, I sighed, what if I was so ugly that people had started to publically talk about me, which is why he had known my name.
‘How..,’ I trailed off, not quite sure how to phrase what I wanted to say. However he seemed to pick up what I meant. Sort of.
‘I’m a history undergrad too. That and I’m quite dorm with Robin who is always bringing over his girlfriend, who I understand is quite good friends with you.’ I nodded. Obviously I was being paranoid, what bitches talk about other people in their free time? Oh, who was I kidding the guy could easily be a great liar.
‘I’m Noah,’ he added after the short silence that had followed his first statement. Luckily for me I didn’t have to say anything as I spotted Jamie being carried over by two guys. One rather large and built, and the other quite slim.
‘I think she needs to go home and lie down,’ suggested the bulky one. I nodded and fumbled around with my car keys. I had started making my way towards the crowd when I felt a warm hand engulf my shoulder – it was the beefy guy.
‘ How about I put her in the car for you? No offence, but its pissing it down and I’ll be able to get her in the car faster than you will be able to. And I’ll be able to tell which car it is because the lights will flash when I press the unlock button. I swear I wont do anything to her or your car, I’m a friend of Noah’s and he knows my name and address if anything did happen. Why don’t you collect her stuff, its behind the table, I think.’ I just nodded along. I didn’t know what to say. That had to be the longest someone from the opposite sex had ever talked to me without teasing me or mentioning my weight. I handed over the car keys and with a tight smile I was able to croak out a reply.
‘I’ll hold you to that.’ I watched as he retreated into the crowded room. I turned back to Noah and his slim friend who, by my surprise, was already holding Jamie’s purse.
‘She’s a wild one I tell you, I haven’t seen her around that much’ Noah’s slim friend stated anxiously.
‘She had a big modelling contract, and she’s only gotten back recently,’ I replied back to them, eager to leave but not quite sure how to. It was times like this I cursed myself for picking on Hannah, who would often have these useless conversations with strangers on a daily basis.
‘No hot shot model boyfriend to pick her up from parties?’ queried Noah’s friend again, his eyes full of curiosity.
‘ I’m Shane by the way.’ Noah’s friend added as an after thought
‘No, she had an off period with relationships, but I think she’s interested in getting back into a relationship,’ I told them.
‘Anyway, I’ve got to go,’ I told the guys, clutching at my cardigan as my arms tightened around my body in an attempt to squash it down to as small as it could be.
‘It’s still raining quite heavily. I’ll tell you what, how about I give you my number and you text us when you get yourself and Jamie home. Think of it as a favour to us, as if anything happens at least then the police wont be banging down our door.’ Shane added a cheeky wink and started to chuckle at his own joke.
‘Sure,’ I said, after chuckling along with Shane’s rather lame joke. I whipped out my phone, hoping not to seem to eager.
‘Here is Noah’s number – I would love to give you mine but I dropped it in the pool outback. Just text Noah when you get home and he’ll relay the message on to us so we can sleep easily at night’ joked Shane before patting me on the back. I gave both boys a smile and a head nod before speed walking out of the house, eager not to recall a sense of déjà vu.
True to his word, the beefy guy was standing outside the car, using his jacket as a shield from the rain.
‘Thank you, for everything,’ I yelled at him before getting into the car. He waved at me before heading back into the house. I dumped Jamie’s soggy purse and shoes on the passenger seat and looked over at her in the back seat. I texted the other two explaining that I had to take Jamie home, before looking back over at the drunk mess in the back seat. The drunk mess who still looked miles better than me despite the fact that I was sober and not a mess.
‘New woman my ass,’ I muttered before clicking the seatbelt and driving off towards my sanctuary.
