8 • The Devil's Servant

Kelsey: I jolt awake as a crow caws from somewhere outside. My hand flies to the knife next to me, my eyes searching the room quickly before landing on Liz. Oh thank god. I sigh in relief and stand up from the wooden chair, wiping dirt off of my pants as I walk over to the couch. Liz mumbles something in her sleep, tossing and turning as I pick up my backpack. 

"I'll be back." I kiss her forehead before walking over to the front door, pulling the door open and stepping out onto the decaying porch. Birds chirp and fly from the trees above me as I walk through the woods, pulling my backpack up more. I need to find a way to get Liz away from here, a wheelchair or something that I can push her in. I frown as I continue to walk. Amber was an idiot. She couldn't see that Kali was going to betray us like she betrayed her team, that guy was right about her being able to kill me in a second. 

I stop dead in my tracks as something catches my eye. I quickly turn and smile wide as the wheelchair comes into full view. Score! I quickly sprint over to the wheelchair, continuing to smile as I check the wheels. This thing looks brand new and everything! I begin to push the wheelchair, pushing as hard as I can. What the hell? I step back from the wheelchair, it not moving as inch. 

A scream escapes my lips as my foot lands on something, a bear trap closing down on my left leg. I fall to the ground, tears falling down my face as I desperately try to remove the bear trap. I turn quickly as a twig snaps behind me, a man towering over me in the daylight. I blink away tears as he kneels down in front of me, another person behind him. 

"P-Please let me g-go..." The man, his face covered from the cloth wrapped around it and his cape. He raises his hand, another scream escaping my lips before being cut off as the world gets plunged into darkness.

I slowly open my eyes, my head pounding as my vision begins to clear slowly. A fire crackles from somewhere behind me, a girl speaking quietly. I hold back a cry as pain shoots up from my leg, the bear trap no longer on it. W-Where am I?  I look around the darkness, the only noise coming from the singing of animals. A leaf crackles from behind me, my head spinning around quickly as the man stepped into my vision. 

"Who are you?" I moved to stand up, only able to get onto my knees before chains pulled me back.

"Don't try to escape." The man kneels down in front of me, the chains seeming to tighten the closer he gets to me. His face is covered in shadow as he pushed me back, my head hitting the trunk as the chains continue to tighten. The world spins as pain fills me head. 

"W-What do you want?" I try to steady my breathing, the world continuing to spin violently. 

"Tell me where Amber Lyrane and Kali Lane are. If you tell me where they are I will let you go back to Elizabeth peacefully." I turn my head to look him in the eyes, them still covered in shadow. 

"Why should I trust you?" I lean forward, the chains continuing to tighten on my wrists. The man leans forward, a knife now against my neck. My eyes widen as I feel it slowly slide, cutting into the skin.

"Because if you don't then you and Elizabeth will die and then I will find Amber myself and kill her before finally killing Kali." I gulp as he pushes into my skin, blood trickling down my neck. 

"F-Fine. I'll tell you where they are." The man pulls the blade away from my neck, moving a little bit away from me. "They are in the city of Overgaard, or near it. They may be in the woods around it since they probably are looking for me or Liz." The man nods and steps back, the chains loosening as he stands up. 

"Thank you Kelsey. You can leave now." I nod and quickly stand, wincing at the pain from my leg as I begin to limp away from him and the campfire. I pray I am moving the right way, hoping the man isn't following me or planning to kill me as I leave.
