Words echoing in the silence. Thoughts of chaos. Words that were spoken minutes ago. Stirring up fear inside. Bleeding out through the ears. Coming right out of the heart. Traversing the body then seeping out of the pores.
Words no longer being spoken but still hanging there, like an invisible threat in between.
"A damn second. I took my eyes off her for just a second and she was gone." Words.
"And you didn't see anything?" Hunter asked.
Micah shook her head. "Not a damn thing. She was gone." Micah snapped her fingers. "Like that."
She sucked in a breath, then exhaled softly. "I went back to look for her. I went to every single store, coffee, bathroom... every damn place in the mall and nothing."
"Didn't you check the security cameras?"
"You think I'm stupid, Hunter? Of course, I did."
"And?" Hunter prompted.
"There was nothing."
"A person just doesn't vanish into air, Micah. There must have been something," Hunter insisted.
Micah's face fell into her palms. For a few long minutes, there was silence. We just watched her, waited for her to say or do something.
After Alpha's call this morning and his announcement that he was coming, Cole had requested we were given some privacy and they gave it to us. They left the house. Hunter and Adam went on their morning patrol while Micah and Jazmine went shopping.
Two hours later, everyone was back, except Jazmine. She had disappeared.
"There was nothing that made sense," Micah cried into her palms.
I saw Adam and Cole exchanging glances. Words were passed out without words, guilt in his eyes once they dared to meet mine. And I wasn't the only one who caught on it.
"There's something you haven't told us, isn't it, Cole?" Hunter growled, sliding to the edge of his seat.
There was so much tension in him, one would think he was a ticking time bomb by just looking at him. And I got it. His mate had disappeared. I'd have been as worried as he was if I had a mate I loved and I'd lost him. However, my case was special and not in a good way.
Cole sighed then stood up from his seat on the sofa. "There is another message you don't know about," he said and reached for his jeans' pocket to retrieve a familiar folded note.
I was seriously getting pissed off by the sight of those now.
He unfolded it then placed it on top of the coffee table for us to take a look. Micah raised her head from her palms and leaned over. Hunter snatched it up before either Micah or I could read it.
"When did you get this?" Hunter asked a few seconds later. His hands were shaking.
"I found it this morning when I went into my office. It was on the desk," Cole explained.
"And you didn't think about mentioning this to us. What the hell, Cole!" Hunter spat.
"I wasn't intending to go. I didn't have a reason to go."
"I'll bet my left nut he took her, Cole," Adam joined. I just looked in between them confused.
What were they talking about? Who took Jazmine?
"You didn't tell me, but you obviously told him." Hunter pointed at Adam and slapped the note against the table.
I didn't dare look down and read. However, I saw Micah lean in to take a look.
