Half an hour ago, Cole had gone into his office and was still on the phone with Michael. Even though the vampire had been MIA for the last six months, there were still ways he could be reached and reach him was what Cole did.
I tried to listen to the conversation but once again, my ears didn't pick a sound. They were talking in low voices, the thick wooden door not allowing any word to escape the hushed conversation.
After going through the rogue's correspondence there was only one thing to be decided and clearly, whatever the decision would be, it wasn't mine to make.
The mistake that landed us in this situation, however, had been. I knew it. The others knew it too.
I could feel their eyes on me and they made me feel like I was sitting on top of pins and needles. Guilty. Uncomfortable. Anxious.
Several painfully long minutes later, Cole finally made his way into the living room and, instantly, all eyes were on him.
"So what did Michael say?" Adam was the first to approach the issue.
Cole halted in the middle of the room and just shook his head. "You're not gonna like it," he said and placed a hand into his jeans' back pocket to retrieve a small sheet of paper.
"I didn't tell you about this but a few days ago I found this note and... I didn't make the connection at first but now, after going through the rogue's emails, it's more than clear what it means."
Coming to stand in front of Cole, Hunter extended his hand. Cole unfolded the note and gave it to Hunter.
Jazmine and Micah joined Hunter as he raised the paper, the only ones left to read it – Adam and I. Glancing at him and seeing the bored expression on his face, I couldn't help but wonder if he didn't know about this already. He and Cole were very close and they mostly spent their time together so it wouldn't be a surprise.
"And what did Michael say about all of this?" Hunter inquired.
Cole sighed. "It was news to him that the Council had information on us too and then when I mentioned this note, he agreed with my assumption that this was a warning," he explained.
I made my way to where the others had gathered in the middle of the room and looked down at the note in Hunter's hand.
The writing was in cursive and highly unintelligible.
'They know what you are and where you are. Run while you still have the chance.'
"There's no sender," I observed aloud. The others exchanged glances.
"No, there isn't. Whoever sent this note obviously didn't think about adding his or her name."
I rolled my eyes. " I was just making an observation. I'm not stupid, Cole."
"That's arguable."
I opened my mouth but before I could spit out something equally nasty, Micah squeezed my shoulder, then turned to Cole.
"Stop being an asshole, Cole," she reprimanded, breaking the tense moment. "So, what did Michael suggest when you explained him the situation?"
He sighed. "I'm sorry for practically calling you stupid, Scarlet. I shouldn't have. And I'm sorry for what I'm going to say next," he told me then, sucking in a breath, added, "About what we will do. Michael and I agreed that the best decision is to seek alpha Greene's protection."
I almost fainted right then and there. "What the hell, Cole? Are you out of your mind?"
Was he seriously going to ask the alpha monster for his protection?
