I was lost watching the illuminated crowns of the trees. They shaped a tunnel-like passage, the sun rays probing through the withered leaves. Some of these same golden colored petals rested on the ground until they became air-born, lifted by the windy hands to dance in their embrace and sing along an inaudible melody.
Magic clung in the chilly morning air. It wafted through the slid-down windows of the car. Small particles of dust flew up in the air after our passage. The tires protested their advance on the dirt road.
A road with no end. A path with no particular direction but the one laying before my eyes.
I didn't trust Micah's driving but it was hard to even keep my lids open. Drifting in exhaustion. She couldn't total yet another car while I wasn't watching, right?
"Don't fall asleep on me, Scar." A slight nudge to my side followed her words. "We're almost there. Just ten more minutes. I promise," she said for probably the hundredth time.
Glancing at her, even with her face blurred in my vision, I couldn't not notice the bags under her eyes. God, but she looked like shit. Probably just as bad as I did.
"You keep saying this yet here we are – in the middle of nowhere," I mumbled back, forcing my eyes to stay open.
"It's really ten minutes this time. Trust me." I believed those words as much as I trusted her driving.
Not at all.
"Ten more minutes," I echoed then sighed. "I just hope there's a bed ready for me 'cause I feel like I'm ready to die."
"A bed as well as breakfast so I say you hold off the dying and let Cole feed you first," she taunted. "A girl should never drop dead on an empty stomach, right?"
Taking that as a hint to make its starving presence known said stomach gave out a mortifying churn.
She glanced at me and chuckled. "See? That's what I'm talking about," she pointed out.
"Eyes the road, please. I'd rather have us live through this drive so I could die later when I'm well fed and tucked into bed, you know." My voice sounded as tired as I felt.
"Yeah, hold it against me, will ya?"
"I'm not holding it against you. I'm-"
"You are holding it against me and I already promised to get you there in one piece, didn't I?" she interjected and shot me a pointed look.
Closing my eyes, I let out yet another deep sigh and prayed. Not for a world peace – for patience. One could never have too much patience where Micah was concerned and mine was clearly running out.
"Alright. I won't say anything about it. Just... keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel, please."
"Just chill, girlfriend," she bellowed. Easier said than done with her right next to me.
The rest of the journey we spent in silence with only the rumble of the engine to listen to. I watched the trees passing by, the light that intensified, the wind that picked up the leaves off the ground, then threw them back to cover it for the coming winter.
And I couldn't help but think of what I was leaving behind.
Imagining Regan with his pack, sitting around the table for breakfast, I could almost hear the laughter that brought them closer and closer to each other. Mate or no mate, he would be enjoying life.
Broken. Empty. Sinking into despair. I didn't believe he would become any of these things. He was too strong to crumble so easily. He was an alpha - the worst of them all – and he was never going to turn out like this rotten girl, his mate.
