Trouble

It's was 1am when I decided to check my phone.
I had 87 missed calls from the sheriff.
And 27 missed calls from Melissa.
It didn't surprise me, we'd turned a 3 day trip into a week and a half investigation.
I sighed and pushed my sleep-heavy body up and off the bed.
I pulled my phone off the charger before shuffling to Scott's room.

I knocked twice and I heard him sigh from inside.
"Kelsey it's 1am." He groaned.
Taking that as an invitation, I walked in.
"Your mom and the sheriff have been blowing my phone up." I told him.
He turned and held himself up on one elbow, blinking a few times to wake up.
"They've been doing that to mine too." He slurred.
"Well what do we tell them?" I asked.
"Nothing, they can't know about the meta humans and the beast. It's better to just let them worry until we get back." He said.
"Scott that's cruel." I said crossing my arms.
"So is waking someone up at 1am." He retorted.
I huffed and left.
Now that I was awake and alert, there was no chance of me sleeping again.
I got up and walked to the main entrance hoping to take a walk and clear my head.
To my surprise Barry was sitting at one of the computers.
"What are you doing awake?" I asked.
My voice clearly startled him.
"I uh- couldn't sleep. Why are you awake?" He asked.
"Same reason." I said sitting down beside him.
His computer screen showed some research and about 45 tabs open.
"What's all this?" I asked looking over the page.
It's was all about werewolves.
Sightings, facts, myths, ect.
"Dr. Wells wanted me to research more information on werewolves so that he could understand more about you." He said looking over at me.
"Me?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Why on earth would he want to do that?" I asked getting that same uneasy feeling in my stomach.
"He said he thinks your interesting. With the whole, 'only half werewolf' thing." He said.
I tried to brush off my paranoia.
"So what have you found so far?" I asked.
He sighed heavily.
"Literally nothing. Even in myths there's no such thing as a half werewolf." He said rubbing his face.
He looked over at me after a second.
"I know you don't wanna talk about this, we can do something different if you'd like." He said.
I shrugged.
"No it's fine, I'll leave you to your work. I was gonna take a walk anyway." I said heading for the exit.
"Wait no!" He said standing, "You can't go out there, it's too dangerous!" He said. I gave him a confused look.
"For all we know there could be more 'beasts' out there." He explained.
"I'll be fine." I told him flashing my eyes to their bright blue.
He stared in amazement.
"How come Scott's are red, a-and Derek's are blue like yours?" He asked. I couldn't tell if he actually cared or if maybe he was just trying to stop me from going outside.
"Scott's an alpha. And alpha's eyes are red." I told him.
"So everyone who isn't an alpha has blue eyes?" He asked.
I hesitated, but shook my head.
"Not exactly." I answered. I didn't want to lie to him, but I also didn't want him know what my blue eyes meant.
He leant forward in his chair, leaning his head on top of his fists, with an intrigued look on his face.
"Most betas have yellow - golden - eyes." I replied shortly.
"Betas? I read about that, they are less powerful than an alpha, but more powerful than an, um-...." He trailed off.
"Omega?" I asked.
"Yeah, So what makes some beta's eyes blue and some gold?" He asked hanging off my every word.
Suddenly I heard footsteps entering and moments later a pissed off Derek stood in the doorway.
"Kelsey I need to ask you something. Privately." He said. I glanced at Barry and rolled my eyes before following Derek into the hall.
He grabbed my arm.
"Do you have any idea what you could have just done?!" He whisper yelled.
"I don't know what you're talking about?" I lied.
"Your eyes. You almost told him about your eyes Kelsey!" He said angrily.
"Derek I know what I'm doing." I told him annoyed, starting to turn around.
He caught my arm.
"No you don't Kelsey! That's your problem! You're still a kid! And you still let your emotions control situations! Just because you feel like you can trust him doesn't mean you can. That's why we won't turn you into a full werewolf. That's why we don't let you fight. Because you can't learn that your feelings don't matter in these situations." He said.
I clamped my jaw shut but my heart rate was rising and my anger was close to taking over.
"Let. Go. Of me." I said through clenched teeth.
Still staring hard into my eyes, he released his grip.
"Did you even stop to think about what would happen to either of us if they found out what makes our eyes blue?" He said taking a step closer.
I pushed him backwards only to be grabbed by the shoulders.
"They would kill us. To them we are murderers despite the circumstances." He said angrily.
"Barry wouldn't kill us." I hissed.
"Then what about Wells? He's on to something about us already." He retorted.
I glared at him.
"Get off me." I growled.
He slowly removed his hands from my shoulders.
I felt his eyes searching mine hoping to find some sort of understanding through my anger.
That was the thing with Derek.
He'd known me all my life, and he's always looked at me as his little sister.
Especially after the house fire.
But what he doesn't understand is that he isn't my older brother. He isn't in control of me.
"Kelsey. Please. Just go back to your room. The less Barry knows, the better." He pleaded, taking a softer tone with me.
I glared up at him before walking toward Barry.
He reached out to stop me but I slipped away.

Barry smiled as I came around the corner.
"Hey, everything okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, Derek's just being, ya know, Derek." I said.
He smiled up at me.
I sighed sadly.
"I think I'm gonna go back to bed." I told him as I leaned against the chair beside him.
He gave me a warm smile and put his hand over mine.
"Get some rest." He told me gently squeezing my hand.
I smiled back down at him.
I wanted to tell him everything.
But as much as I hated to say it, Derek was right.
If anything got back to Wells, he could kill us. Or turn us in. Or something.

As I lay in bed Derek's words echoed in my head.
"That's why we won't turn you into a full werewolf."
That meant that they could turn me.
They let me live in agonizing pain for a year after it happened, knowing they could turn me.
And still to this day, the pain that comes with my body still rejecting it.
They are content with letting me live like this?
