You were always afraid of heights. But, on that day, heights became your best friend.

You stand still on the roof of a tall building, staring down at the people below. Somewhere down there, Sherlock is staring back up at you. You hold the phone against your ear, your hand shaking slightly as it rings.

"[Y/N]? What are you doing?" Sherlock questions the moment he answers your call. Your eyes scan the crowd below you, finally finding your friend.

"I'm so sorry Sherlock," you whisper into the phone, not taking your eyes off of him. This was something you had to do.

"Just come down," he begs, his voice slightly strained as he stares up at you. "I need you safely on the ground with me. Just come down, okay?"

"I can't do that. I have to do this Sherlock, you know that. This is something that I can't leave undone," your voice shakes, cracking slightly. Tears stream down your face as you stare down at your best friend.

"Yes you can [Y/N]. Now, step off of the ledge and come down here. I need you to stay alive and strong for me. Please?" His voice wavers and cracks as he begs, tears now streaming down his face as well.

"Sherlock, there's no reason for me to be alive. Everywhere I go, people get killed. Because of who I am, innocent lives are taken everyday. I can't live with it anymore. I can't take the guilt," you cry out, clenching the phone tightly.

"That's not true," Sherlock argues, taking a step towards the building. "So many people are alive because of you. It's not your fault that some of them didn't live. You can't control that [Y/N]."

"And you can't control this Sherlock." With those final words, you hang up the phone, tossing it somewhere onto the roof behind you.

"I love you Sherlock. I promise I'll see you again someday."

You step off of the ledge, plunging down through the air and towards the concrete below. The wind flies through your hair as you fall, making the trip to your death seem almost peaceful. Within seconds, you're lying dead on the ground, your blood surrounding you.

This isn't something you'll walk away from. You truly took away your life for his own safety.

You died so he could live.
