On hearing her voice again, addressing him this time, Zac was left somewhat speechless. "Hey," he said as confidently as possible, trying to hide the slight tremble in his voice. "How have you been?" Zac asked with a small smile. It took him a lot of strength to muster up a smile for the girl he had once loved because on seeing her face, he immediately got reminded of the messy way that things between them had ended.
Ashley gave him a blank stare. "None of your business," she spat out before turning on a foot, meaning to go as far away from him as possible.
On noticing her attempt at a hasty departure, Zac snapped out of his daze. "Hey, hey, hey," he said hurriedly, jogging after her. "Wait," he demanded in a firm tone.
"What?" she asked furiously. "Wait, really? Why?" She glared at him, disgusted at the fact that he had the balls to talk to her or even as much as look at her face, after all that had happened, happened. Her eyes flickered down to her hand, which was in the firm hold of that of Zac. Roughly, she pulled her wrist away before looking up at him, her eyes full of hatred. "Well?"
Zac was shocked on seeing this new side of Ashley. She never was aggressive. 'But then a lot can change over four years,' he thought wryly. He swallowed. "Can we talk?"
"No."
"You won't even ask about what?"
"No."
"Don't you want to know?"
"No. Can I leave now?" she asked impatiently.
Zac stuffed his hands down the front pockets of his khaki colored trousers. "Ash . . ."
"Don't call me that."
"I'm sorry."
Ashley stared at him. "Whatever," she replied shortly while wondering if he was sorry about calling her 'Ash' or if it was about what had happened four years ago.
Zac simply stared at her as he felt something in him change. He sighed, realizing exactly how beautiful he used to find her. "Just perfect," he mumbled in a barely audible voice, thinking about what he used to think of Ashley, all those years back.
"What?"
He shook his head hurriedly. "Nothing." As his eyes once over raked over her body, he realized that he still found her 'just perfect'.
Ashley blinked, wondering why she was within a few metres of the man she claimed she hated more than anything. "I'm leaving," she said, sounding slightly annoyed. Once again, she turned around and made to walk away. The difference was that this time, Zac didn't stop her.
Zac just stood there, wondering how could have he been so stupid to let go of someone as wonderful as Ashley and something as precious as the close bond that the two of them had shared for four long years. He ran a hand through his hair slowly, hating himself more than anything. "Why?" he mumbled in a low voice to himself. Zac took a deep breath. He had to fix things between himself and Ashley, for closure, if not for anything else. He simply had to do it. Looking around in a frenzy, Zac realized that the brunette wasn't anywhere to be seen and that she had indeed left. He jogged towards the door he thought was the exit of the banquet hall where the ceremony was taking place, that day. "Ashley!" he exclaimed loudly as he spotted her standing on the pavement, a little distance away, busy with her phone.
On hearing his voice, Ashley glanced up and a shadow on sadness crossed her face. She looked furious. "Which part of I don't want to talk did you not understand?" she asked him.
