Flashback
" Let's go M the ice-cream truck just pulled in!", an excited seven year old Luke exclaimed as he bent with short arms rested on his knees trying to catch his breath after running from the end of the block to Maya's house.
Little five year old Maya quickly sprang out of her swing to her friend. She grabbed his hands and propelled them both back the way Luke was coming from. He lost his balance but quickly righted himself as he ran after Maya who happily ran down the street to get her ice-cream.
Luke watched the road very carefully before they crossed the street to join the long line behind those who also waited for the frozen treat.
Finally, after what seemed like ages to them, they reached the front of the line.
"Luke can I have the strawberry one please?" asked Maya grinning up at her friend showing her two missing front teeth.
"OK M", Luke replied always trying to please his friend.
"Can we have two scoops of strawberry ice-cream and two scoops of chocolate chip ice-cream please sir?" Luke asked the ice-cream man.
"Of course son", replied the ice-cream man who always enjoyed serving these two children. Just one look at them and he knew that boy would protect his friend and they'd always be together no matter where their circumstances led them.
