The Unexpected

Chapter 10

His vision clouded by tears he ran as fast as his legs would carry him, in the distance he could hear the voice of his father.

Except he'd just been told that he wasn't his father after all, and that Adam was.

Sure, Adam was a nice man, and he liked Kim and their kids, but he didn't want him to be his father. He already had a father, the best one a kid could ask for.

Jake kicked at the ground, he hunched over to catch his breath. His lungs tight from chasing after Luke, "I lost him, son of a bitch!" He yelled in between breaths.

He looked over to see Kim on her cellphone, obviously barking out orders. He heard her give a description of Luke to who ever it was on the other end of the phone.

"Thanks" she said softly as she hung up.

She went to Adam who was furiously typing into his iPhone, "Adam, that was Erin. She sent Jay to the district, they'll find him."

He looked up from his phone, "Just texted Al" he explained, "Jake, my team will track him down. He won't get far"

Jake nodded, "I didn't think he'd react that way...he didn't mean what he said you know"

Adam shrugged, "doesn't matter, we just need to find him"

Chicago was easy to get lost in, Adam had seen the ugliness that roamed the city and he was terrified. His son was just a little boy, a hurt little boy.

One that would be an easy mark.

He was shocked to see where his legs had taken him, he didn't know where he would go when he bolted from the hotel. The only thing he knew was that he wanted to get away from all of them.

He frantically pushed the button for the elevator, he knew they'd be looking for him and he wasn't quite ready to be found.

The elevator finally opened and he stepped inside, pushing the corresponding number for the floor he needed.

Adam paced in the lobby, "Alright. Keep me posted" he grumbled into the phone, he slid it in his back pocket, he grabbed Kim's hand and led her to the corner off the lobby away from Jake.

"This was a mistake" he spoke softly, "I knew this would happen" he told her, he knew he should have went with his first instinct. Should've trusted his gut, but he let his heart cloud his judgement.

Kim just shook her head in disbelief, "Don't Adam, he needed to know. As much as he's hurting now..."

"Don't" Adam interrupted, "he's too young to understand any of this, this was wrong"

Jake could see the look on Adam's face he walked over to them, "I'm sorry, I should have handled this differently" he jammed his hands in his pockets, "I should have told him last night, when it was just us"

Kim patted his arm, "forget it..alright? He couldn't have gotten far, we can figure everything else out once we've found him"

He pushed the heavy door open and approached her bedside, she still looked as if she was sleeping.

The bandages had been removed but the breathing tube remained, her arms in restraints.

He dragged the chair close to her bed, he sat on his knees in the chair, resting his arms on the bed.

"You lied" he whispered, "Why did you lie?"

He struggled with his emotions, his body convulsing with sobs, "I hate you! Just die already....you ruined everything!"

Nurse Martinez was startled by screams, she took off for the room where the voice was coming from. Her hart breaking at the sight in front of her, she took a deep breath and entered the room.

"Luke, honey..." She spoke softly.

Luke looked over his shoulder at her, "I hate her..." He ran the back of his hand across his tear stained face, "she lied..."

"Adam?" Kim called him over, she had a gut feeling she knew where Luke had run off to, "I think I know where Luke may be" she could see the fear in her husband's eyes and try as he might to hide it, she could see the hurt.

"Where?" He asked pinching the bridge of his nose.

"The hospital" Kim explained, "Jake? Do you think Luke would go to the hospital?"

Jake furrowed his brow, "I suppose" he jammed his hands in his pockets, "I will call them"

"No..we should just head over there" Adam suggested, "come on, I'll drive"

She handed him the can of soda, "Try and calm down" Nurse Martinez rubbed his back, "where's your dad?"

Luke opened the can, "He's at the hotel...he's not my dad. That's what she lied about, he's not my dad. Adam is" he said softly, "I don't want Adam to be my dad"

Adam stopped in his tracks, "You heard him...." He whispered, "I can't go in.."

He felt Kim slip her hand in his and squeeze it, "Adam, he's just in shock" she told him

Adam shook his head, "No. I'm not who he needs right now, you go in Luke." He backed away from the door, "just....could..you please call me and let me know how he is?"

Jake nodded, "Absolutely" 

Kim and Adam stood outside the door for a few minutes, Kim didn't know what to do, "Adam?"

He looked at her, "Let's go. He's my son in blood only...I can't take him from Jake, I won't do that to Luke..I can't do that to Luke" his voice soft.

"Adam.."

"I won't. So don't bother trying to change my mind.." He interjected.

"Even if it breaks your heart?" Kim questioned him, she knew him like the back of her hand, he was hurting over this.

He nodded, "Yes. As long as Luke's happy..and he is..with Jake"

I've really been struggling with this and I hate when it happens mid story, it makes it so hard to continue it.

It may take a while but I'll get this finished.

I may expand on my submission for the Burzek FanFiction cutest Marina and Paddy are  doing, at the very least it might help clear my mind when it comes to this one..
