The Unexpected

Chapter 13

Adam groaned, "I'll talk to her" he was shocked by Lily's reaction, he knew it was a lot to take for an adult so he could only imagine how confusing it must be for her. He just never expected her to be angry and storm off.

Kim put her hand on his chest, stopping him in his tracks, "No, let me talk to her. Stay with the boys"

He nodded wordlessly and sat back down on the floor, watching Luke and Holden rebuild the tower to play again.

"Hey sweetie" Kim spoke as she entered Lily's bedroom, Lily lying face down on the bed her face buried in her pillow, "talk to me, why're you so upset?"

Lily lifted her tear stained face from the pillow, "How is he daddy's?"

Kim sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed her back, "He just is. Look I know it's hard to understand but he's your brother..it's a good thing"

"He's not your son?" Lily sat up.

"No, he's not"

"Whose his mommy? Where is she?"

Kim leaned against the headboard pulling Lily closer to her, "His mommy was somebody daddy knew a long time ago" Kim told her, "and she's in heaven"

Lily's eyes grew big, "Like your daddy?"

Kim nodded, "Yes, like grandpa" it pained her neither one of her children had met her father, he'd passed away when she was in high school. Her father would have made a wonderful grandfather and she hated that her kids would never know him.

"That's sad" Lily remarked softly, playing with the bracelet on Kim's wrist.

"Yes it is" Kim responded, "Luke needs us, he needs us to love him. Do you think you can do that?"

Lily wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, "I can"

"That's my girl" Kim smiled as she kissed the top of Lily's head, "let's go back to the living room"

Lily approached Luke, "I'm sorry" she muttered, "I'm sorry your mom is in heaven, and I guess I'm happy you're my brother" she sat down in Adam's lap.

Adam bent down to kiss the top of her head, "That's my girl"

"Thanks Lily, I'm glad you're my sister" Luke said softly, tears in his eyes, he ran the back of his hand across his eyes, "let's play another game"

Later that night Kim and Adam sat snuggled on the couch, in the midst of a movie night with the three kids all camped out on the living room floor.

Despicable Me 2 playing in the background, Kim looked over at the kids, "I think they're sleeping" she whispered as she laid her head back down on Adam's chest.

He chuckled, "then why are we still watching this weird ass movie?" He kissed the crown of her head, "hey, Kim?" His tone shifting to something she couldn't quite name.

She propped herself up on her elbow to look him in the eye, "What is it?"

"LJ" he said softly, "what did you say to her?"

"Nothing much..just that Luke needed us" she explained, "and he does, Adam he needs all of us"

Adam nodded, "Kim, I know where you're going with this, and I want it too...but I won't force Luke to stay with us"

She could feel her eyes well with tears, "I know...and I promise I don't expect you to...it just sucks, you know? He's your son and he should be with us"

"I know darlin', I know" he pulled her closer to him, "let's just enjoy the rest of the week with him, alright?"

Luke could feel his stomach flip as he listened to them talk, neither one aware that he was awake.
