You were soulmates centuries ago.
"So, should I be insulted that the only time you call me up in over 500 years is for a favour?", you said, leaning against the doorframe of the Mikaelson's living room.
" Desperate times call for desperate measures", Klaus said, standing up and looking at you softly.
"So I'm a desperate measure? How sweet", you said, as you hugged him.
Humour was your mechanism for coping with the overwhelming emotions that seeing Klaus gave you. 500 years ago, you and Klaus had been crazily in love with each other. You were soulmates, fitted together to create the perfect jigsaw puzzle. Until pieces got missing along the way, and you just didn't fit right together anymore.
" You're not a desperate measure. It's just, seeing you is like-"
"Rubbing a mountain of salt into a very sensitive, deep wound?", you suggested.
" Precisely ", he smiled.
He too was trying to handle his emotions. All he really wanted to do was push you against the door frame there and then and kiss you until time stopped, no matter the consequences. Instead, he settled for a polite smile.
" It sounded urgent Niklaus. Yet vague. What exactly is it you want me to do for you?", you asked him, as you folded your arms.
"I need you to cloak me and my family. And I need you to locate a white oak stake", he said formally.
"And you couldn't have compelled a witch to do that for you?", you said, your voice unimpressed.
" Not one I trust ", he said, his eyes piercing yours.
" You're still running", you stated, shaking your head at the injustice and infuriation you felt whenever you thought of Mikael, and the torture he consistently put his children though.
"I can do one better than a cloaking spell. I can link you to me", you said easily. He looked at you carefully.
" I'm immortal. You're a witch. How would that benefit me?", he asked.
"I'm a 700 year old, very powerful witch. I'm one of the original witches. And white oak doesn't work on me. My body rejects it. It's ineffective. Stabbing me with it is like stabbing me with a jellybean. I can transfer that inefficiency to your body", you explained.
" What's the catch? ", he asked, his posture tense.
" There is none", you replied.
"There's always a catch", he said slowly.
" Niklaus, don't. That's one of the reason we disintegrated. Your crippling paranoia will end you before Mikael if you're not careful. There is no catch. With the history we have, how could you expect me not to help you?", you asked softly. "Do you trust me?", you asked. He paused, before nodding.
You grabbed a pocketknife from your jacket pocket and cut a small wound in your hand. You handed the knife to Klaus and he did the same. You held your hands out and he grabbed them. Then your eyes closed and you began muttering incantations. Your breathing got heavier and your chest tightened, but you continued regardlessly, until Klaus pulled away roughly, causing you to open your eyes.
" Why would you do that? ", you asked breathlessly.
" Dammit Y/N, you're bleeding! You didn't say it would hurt you!", he said furiously. You wiped your bleeding eyes impatiently.
"It's fine!", you said dismissively.
" No, it's not fine. I don't need your death of my plate okay?", he said sharply.
"Like it would bother you", you said harshly. He paused, looking at you carefully.
" Why would you even say that?!", he said, his voice low with fury.
"500 years Niklaus! 500! Without a word! How can you say you care?", you burst out.
" I was trying to make a clean break Y/N! What you think I've been doing, heel taps and skipping happily around? It's hell okay! Is that what you want from me?", he said furiously.
"I don't want anything from you Niklaus! I want you!", you spat out passionately. He tensed.
" We weren't working and you know it ", he said, the fight going from his voice.
" We only worked together and you know it", you retorted. "We were soulmates Niklaus. We hit a bump in the road and you scattered instead of fighting for us! For me", you said, your eyes watering. His own eyes watered and he opened his mouth to reply but you cut across him.
" Forget it. I'm done", you said, your voice dull.
"You're not done", he said firmly.
" What? ", you said, looking at him tiredly." You're not done", he repeated. "You want me to fight. I'll fight. I thought leaving you was the right thing to do. Obviously I made an error in judgement. You don't get to walk out, because I'm going to fight for you to stay. For us. Because I don't want to go another second without you in my life Y/N", he said, his voice steady and firm. Your heart fluttered in your chest.
" You don't get to just leave when things get tough again", you told him, your voice tear choked.
"I know", he said, walking towards you. His hands touched your hips, and it was as if you were branded by his touch.
" How do I believe you?", you asked.
"You asked do I trust you. And I do. Do you trust me?" You nodded. "Then you just have to trust me. I won't ever leave you again", he whispered, before touching your lips with his. And just like that, the missing pieces of your jigsaw puzzle were found.
