We had come back from California two days ago and I hadn't had a peep from Zak.
I couldn't face work and managed to do the majority of it at home. I tried to call Nick but it went to voicemail, again. I sighed and shook my head putting the phone down. I began to think of going home, back to Iowa, away from the Vegas life style and back to somewhere familiar, safe and comforting. When you go on holiday you're suppose to come back relax and refreshed.. I felt very far from that.
I wanted green fields and rivers. Grass between my toes and fresh air. I wanted to take the Principals river walk and go to the state fair that happened every summer. I left there after the predictability of life in Iowa but right now.. Predictability is exactly what I needed.
I had to go to work today.. I had coaxed myself to get ready now I just needed to go in. I left my house and got into the car.
All I have to do is drive.. Just drive there and the rest is history.
My phone cut me off making me rummage and retrieve it from my bag.
'Yello!'
'Hey babe! Skip work pick me up and let's go shopping!'
'Oh Kate..'
'We need to catch up right?'
'I'm on my way.' I hung up and tossed my phone into my bag.
Looks like work is off the menu again.
-----------------
My first port of call was Zak's contact prescription. He needed them more than I needed clothes. I had them and put them in my bag
"Let's get some shopping done!" Kate said excitedly pulling me into the mall.
The more we walked the more I spent, I needed it all (I didn't need any of it).
We stopped to have a coffee, I loved coffee shops mainly for the smell and feel of the environment. It was manic but you could snuggle down into a large leather seat with a hot chocolate or coffee and watch the world pass by.
I explained it all to Kate who was the perfect listener, giving her acknowledging nod but never interrupting me.
"Sometimes Brit, and it's not all the time. Just hear me out.. But I think you push everyone away when you are with him."
"Wha-"
"I know I'm an instant when Zak stays over because you barely have time to answer your phone to me. You're so wrapped up in him that if I do ring you can't wait to end the call." She answered.
Award for the worst best friend... Goes to me!
"I- do I?"
She nodded.
"We used to be thick as thieves me and you. But when Zak started staying I guess I lost you a little bit and had to start sharing you.. I didn't like it. I mean look. We come out today and the first thing you did was pick up his contacts.."
"I was passing.."
"Brittany. You rang Cece and did a job that was hers. You constantly run around after him."
"Fine, yeah I admit I do. Kate I'm so mad at him, but hurt at the same time. I've never lied to him but he's made out its all about him."
"Zak is a.. I don't know how to put it."
"Just be brutal." I answered.
"He's very selfish. He likes to have your attention at all times. You run to his beck and call. You're gonna friendzone yourself.." She sipped her coffee.
