The inside of the RV is too quiet. Too still. And tense. Like a mirror paused in free fall. Then I spot her.

Sam stands in the kitchen area. Hands limp at her side. Damp sun dress sucks at her pores. Bright red coats her right hand up to her elbow.

She offers me a crooked, knotted up smile.

"About fucking time my ride showed up," Sam says.

The sight is so bizarre I'm almost surprised when she talks.

"You OK?" I say.

"Yeah. Fine," Sam says.

I scan the RV. No signs of Les. The door to the bedroom is shut, though.

"Anyone else here with you?" I say.

"Just Les. He's in the bedroom. Won't be coming out for a while," Sam says. Gives a faux look of confusion. "Say, I think I lost my lucky raccoon penis. You see it around here?"

I match her look. Only mine is genuine.

"I guess not," I say.

"Oh, silly me," Sam says. "It must've slipped up Les's dickhole when I went down on him. Talk about a coincidence, huh?"

Holy shit. That's brutal. The thought of the long, thin raccoon penis jewelry curving up like that makes me wince. I feel it in my own crotch.

"Oh, OK," I say.

Sam raises her red hand.

"I just gave it a twist," she says. "And pulled."

Holy shit.

"I think I get it," I say. "Is he dead?"

"If he's not, he wishes he was," Sam says. Seems satisfied.

I look out the window. Spot flashlights headed our way.

"We need to get going. Les's guys are going to be here any second," I say.

Sam laughs.

"So serious," she says.

We bail out of the RV. Red's moved himself into the cab of the truck. I make him ride bitch between me and Sam.

Red offers a weak wave hi as I start up the truck. Looks a cough away from death.

"Who's this?" Sam says.

I pass the Anaconda to her.

"I'll explain later. If he moves, kill him," I say.

I watch Red's eyes fix on Sam. He stares hard at her. Like he's not sure if he recognizes her. Sam does her best to avoid eye contact.

The report from a shotgun behind us has me hitting the gas. Dumb bastard puts a hole through the window of another RV next to us. Terrible shots, those guys.

Time to get the hell out of the Man Camp.
