Chapter 48- Identified
Deeks' POV
Time seemed to pass more quickly than usual because suddenly it was almost midnight, and everyone was still working on overdrive to find the Point Dume Drowner. Callen was checking every crime scene report the LAPD had given us-for the tenth time at least. Sam was staring at the picture of Fiona Wineberg on the suspect board. Lucky for me, Kensi broke it to him that his friend was having an affair so I wouldn't end up in the morgue also. Nate was helping Eric and Nell out by watching the rest of the traffic cam footage so they could pull the victims' files and check for any overlaps the LAPD missed. Kensi was going over the forensic data from the coroners report. I was looking through the files Eric gave me on everyone affiliated with Paul and the other victims.
An intern came in with a tray of Starbucks and set a coffee down on each of our desks.
"These are from Assistant Director Granger. He says to keep up the search."
"Thanks, Colby. You can go home you know, interns don't have to stay after hours." Sam said. The young college kid looked down at his feet and frowned.
"That serial killer drowned my neighbor, Carol. She was victim number 5. Carol used to come over and feed my dog when I was gonna be home late. She was the nicest woman... I'd just rather stay here where he can't get me."
"Sorry for your loss... If you want to get some sleep theres a pretty comfortable couch in Nate's office. He won't mind, and he's helping up in the Tech Center anyways." Kensi suggested.
"Thanks. See you guys later." Colby smiled faintly and walked out of the bullpen.
"Poor kid..." I muttered and shook my head. Knowing someone that has been murdered isn't easy to contemplate.
Maybe an hour later, Nell came bouncing down the stairs towards us frantically.
"I think I found him!" She pushed a different file into each of our hands. "David Mendosa is a bartender that fills in at a whole bunch of bars around town. I looked at his credit card reciepts, and he was at every bar each victim frequented the day before they went missing. That explains why we didn't find any other connection, they all went to different bars and clubs, but the tender was the same. I have his address and the bar he made a purchase at five minutes ago."
"Damn, good job Nell!" We all got up and rushed out to our cars. Callen and Sam were taking the house and Kensi and I will go to the bar.

We pulled up to the busy bar. Even at this late hour it was almost full of people. Kensi and I immedially went into undercover mode. Kensi wobbled into the place, a sea of eyes already on her. She was playing an already drunk girl so if Mendosa was there he would let his guard down a little. I sat down closest to the door in case he tried to run.
Kensi's POV
I sat down on a bar stool in front of Mendosa. He turned and eyed me, then put on a flirty smile.
"What can I get for you, Sweetheart?"
"Any sort of a-a-alcohollll." I slurred.
"Damn girl, how much have you had to drink already?"
"I dunno. Thisss many?" I shrugged and held up one floppy hand with a giggle. "You know, you're prettyyy hot. Would you cheat on my like idiot boyyfriendd?"
"No I would never. Cheaters are horrible people that don't know what they have right in front of them. Believe me, they always pay for their choices."
"I LIKE you! You make no sense!" I giggled again. 'Wow I sound like an annoying teen girl.' I thought to myself. I really hated flirting with killers.
"So what's your name, sweetheart?" Mendosa smiled, leaning over the counter.
"Brittany... I think. Maybe it's Brianna. My brain is a wittle foggy." I bit my lip and laughed some more.
Mendosa leaned in and pressed his lips on my ear and started whispering. "Well, sweetheart, I can help you take care of that unfaithful boyfriend."
He suddenly put his hand down on the small of my back, something I didn't even think was possible from behind a bar. He hit the butt of my gun, and froze. Pushing me backwards into a table, he pointed a knife at me.
"Who the hell are you?" He yelled.
"Federal Agent, put the knife down." I said calmly.
"Not today." He said, and threw the knife. I ducked quickly and the knife lodged in the wall behind my head. I stood back up and Mendosa was gone. Everyone around us was screaming and running out of the bar. It was chaos. Deeks ran up to me looking worried.
"You okay? Mendosa must have snuck out the back or something. I didn't see him go out at all..." He said quickly, his eyes still scanning the crowd on full alert.
"I'm fine, but now he knows were on to him. Damn it, we had him and I got to close." I slammed my fist down on the table in frustration.
"It wasn't your fault, Kens. Who could have guessed he would touch your gun?"
"I think his victims were all cheaters. He seemed very interested when I said my boyfriend cheated on me. He even offered to take care of him for me. We need to cal Sam and Callen and tell them Mendosa could be on his way home."
"I don't think he's going home. If you're gonna go into hiding, would you go to the address that we could know about? I think we lost him this time."
*^*
Mendosa didn't go home, just like Deeks said. We set up a surveilllance team outside his house just in case, but it was unlikely he would ever return. We were back to searching, tearing apart Mendosa's life for anything that could tell us where he was.

Short chapter, I'm sorry, but I still need to stretch this case between two more chapters.
