Chapter 53- Revenge
Deeks' POV
"You found the partner?" Callen said, his eyes widening.
"His name is Jamal Woodrow, and he isn't technically a 'partner'. He's a professional killer and crime lord." I said, pointing to the file I had placed on his desk.
"Wait, if he's a pro, why did Jacobson kill Kensi and not him?" Sam asked peering over Callen's shoulder.
"I don't know, it's personal for him. And that isn't the part I'm worried about." I sighed and turned the page over to a long list of people.
"What am I looking at?"
"Woodrow's network of criminals. He built an empire of bad guys that will do anything for him. I looked at Kensi's notes and she figured it out too. According to LAPD, he had a hit out on a woman matching her description: tall, brown hair, and brown eyes, one darker than the other. Jacobson just happened to be part of his followers."
"So we're actually dealing with dozens of murderers and low-lives that wanted Kensi's head on a platter."
"Exactly."
"How has he been under the radar for so long? An organization like this should be all over the watch lists." Sam shook his head as he read the names of Woodrow's criminals.
"I think Kensi was the first to figure it out. LAPD classified it as an inactive gang. They don't mark their work, so there's a bunch of cold cases that don't connect with anything."
Callen closed the file and looked up at me.
"You know we can't treat this like a revenge mission, Deeks. This is way bigger than we ever thought. We have to handle this one by the book."
I chewed on the inside of my cheek nervously. Callen noticed.
"What the hell did you do?" He demanded and stood up.
"I sort of resumed this old cover of mine. It's from when I was in LAPD, but I've been backing it up for years now. It has arrest records, medical records, even a birth certificate. I can get in on his organization and take it down from the inside."
"Deeks, that's crazy. This is a group of professional bad guys. They will probably want you to prove who you are, do some sort of initiation or something. You're gonna get yourself killed."
"I need to finish what Kensi started. She would have wanted this thing busted."
"We all know she wouldn't have wanted you to be stupid and get hurt, either." Sam yelled at me.
"I don't care if I have your support or not. I'm going under. I didn't come here to ask for your opinion, I came here so you weren't in the dark." I yelled back.
"Does Hetty know what you're planning?"
"Yes, actually, she's the one having Eric and Nell backstop my cover just in case."
"There's no way she would authorize this. It's suicide!" Callen stormed over to Hetty's desk where she was watching us argue. Sam and I followed close behind.
"Boys, boys, calm down." She shouted. We all fell silent. "Mr. Deeks is right. We need to get someone on the inside of this, and Mr. Deeks' cover is solid, I looked it over myself."
"But Hetty he's gonna get killed." Callen complained.
"Well we don't know that either. This is a system of professional criminals. It's like a business, and businesses work differently than gangs. It will be difficult, but I believe Mr. Deeks has what it takes to infiltrate it."
