[Author's Birthday Special]
Iwaizumi stirred awake hearing soft sobs and sniffles by his side. Cracking his eye lids open, he inhaled deeply through his nose, turning to me. I had my back against him, the sheets pulled over my shoulder. He placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, propping himself up with free arm.
I turned to him, covering my mouth with the back of my hand. Seeing my furrowed brows and the tears rolling down my face, he planted a kiss on my shoulder, tilting my face to wipe away my tears. "Hey," He said in a low, tender voice.
"I'm sorry," I apologized in a whisper, more tears escaping from my eyes. "I didn't mean to wake you."
"No I'm glad you did." He assured me, planting a kiss on my forehead. I swallowed, trying to stop my tears.
"It's my birthday today, Hajime-kun." I said and whimpered immediately after that. "I hate this. I hate my birthday, Hajime-kun. So much."
"Shh..." He pushed himself up to cage me in his arms and legs. He brushed my tears away, keeping his eyes at mine. "It's okay."
"No it's not." I cried. "Today sucks. I wish it never existed."
"Don't say that," He furrowed his brows at me. "If today didn't exist, you wouldn't exist too." I pursed my lips, sobbing a little more. Iwaizumi sighed, pushing my tears away silently. He planted kisses all over my body, trying his best to comfort me.
"I love you," He whispered, his lips hovering right above mine before he pressed them against mine. "I love you."
--
Iwaizumi got me dressed after I had managed to stop crying. Without telling me where we were heading, he ushered me into the car and started to drive. A soft smile lingered on his lips as he drove, occasionally glancing at me.
I fiddled my fingers, sinking deeper into the passenger's seat. I was anxious as to what Iwaizumi had planned for me. I started to worry if it was a birthday party, with all the balloons and decorations, with a huge 'Happy Birthday, Rae!' on the wall or hanging on the ceiling. As I thought more about the party poppers and guests with party hats, my expression started to become contorted once more. I felt sick to my stomach.
I flinched when Iwaizumi took my hand, pulling it to his lips for a kiss. "Don't worry, alright?" He assured me, giving me a quick glance before turning back to the road. "Trust me on this."
I hesitantly nodded, squeezing his hand.
--
Getting out of the car, I realized that we had arrived at the cake house I own. Since Iwaizumi and I were still on our honeymoon leave, so my cake house was still closed. I raised a brow at my husband as he took my hand, smiling down at me. "What are we doing here, Hajime-kun?"
"There's a surprise for you inside." He said, taking a step forward. I tugged onto his hand, refusing to budge.
"H-Hajime-kun... I can't." I shook my head. He let out a little chuckle, caressing my cheek.
"I know you're afraid. But trust me on this, Rae." He said, looking deep into my eyes. "I promise that there are no fancy party poppers or party hats or balloons or decorations of any sorts. I'll be by your side, and if you really want to leave later, we'll do that, okay?"
I chewed on my lip, taking a deep breath before nodding. "Okay." I squeezed his hand tighter.
"That's my girl," He kissed my hair before guiding me into my shop. As we entered my shop, I found all our friends there, waiting for us with smiles on their faces. I inched closed to Iwaizumi, anxiety rising within me. "It's alright. They just have something to tell you." He assured me.
"That's right, Rae-chan." Oikawa nodded, walking up to us. "You don't have to be afraid of us. This isn't a surprise birthday party. It's an appreciation party." He grinned at me, putting his hands on my shoulder.
"Appreciation... Party?..." I echoed, blinking at the brunette.
"Sou da!" He nodded. "Saa, take a seat here!" He guided me to sit on a chair, with Iwaizumi following closely. Oikawa leaned over my shoulder, placing a photo of me, himself and Iwaizumi back when we were in high school. They were in their volleyball jerseys while I wore the baby blue PE shirt. Oikawa and I posed our fingers in a 'V' shape, sticking out tongues while Iwaizumi did his signature pout in between us.
Seeing the photo put a smile on my face as I gently traced our faces with my fingertips. "Without Rae-chan, Iwa-chan and I wouldn't have had such a great time back in high school." Oikawa said, putting a hand on my shoulder, pulling me into a slight hug. "Arigatou na, Rae-chan~"
"Tooru..." I said as we pulled away from our hug.
Next up was Mattsukawa. He put his hands on Iwaizumi's shoulders, hovering his face right next to my husband's. I giggled at his straight face while Iwaizumi grumbled. "Without Rae, I wouldn't be able to see the unexplored sides of Iwaizumi." He said, poking Iwaizumi's cheek playfully.
Hanamaki walked up to me, presenting me a plate of cream puffs. "Without Rae, I wouldn't have free and delicious cream puffs." He said, making me laugh. He picked up one cream puff, popping it into my mouth before feeding himself one too.
Gintoki walked up to me, scratching the back of his head. "Eh... Without Rae-chi, I would have died due to lack of sugar." He said, flashing his teeth at me. "Arigatou na."
"Gin-chan..."
"Without Rae-chan," Kagura spoke up in her adorable voice. "No one will feed me whenever I'm hungry and play with me. Dakara, you're important to me. Don't forget that, 'kay?" I nodded, smiling at Kagura as she smiled at me.
"Without Rae-san, I wouldn't know who to turn to for advises." Shinpachi said, pushing up his glasses as he smiled at me. "Thank you for all the things you've done for Gin-san, Kagura-chan and I."
"Shin-chan..."
"Without Rae-san, I wouldn't have someone to be share my sadistic side with." Sougo said, keeping his hands in his pockets. I laughed, nodding in agreement.
"Without Rae, I wouldn't have anyone who wouldn't judge me and my mayonnaise." Hijikata said. I could see a bottle of mayonnaise poking out of his back pocket. "Also, I wouldn't get the chance to have an entire cake made of mayonnaise just for me."
"Without you," Hajime crouched next to me, taking my hands in his. He brushed my wedding band gently with a smile on his face. "I wouldn't be able to marry the love of my life and I wouldn't be as happy as I am right now." I smiled back at him, the tears slowly building up in my eyes. "So thank you."
"Hajime-kun..." I looked into his eyes, my facial muscles completely out of my control at this point.
"Rae-chan!" Everyone said in unison, smiling down at me as they formed a semi-circle before me. "Thank you for existing! We love you!"
"Minna..." I covered my mouth as my shoulders shook. I was crying really ugly at that point, but I couldn't stop smiling as well. "Arigatou..."
Birthdays don't always have to be scary after all.
