___________Ivy forgot how to breath.
How would he know? Was this man making a mockery of her? Getting her hopes up and then letting her down?
However, the way that his jaw was set and his face was serious. She knew that the next words that came out of his mouth would be anything but a lie.
She swallowed, only barely holding it together.
"Tell me." Her voice wavered slightly.
He nodded, understanding written across his face.
It was way past dawn but she didn't care if they went without her, she needed to know who had slaughtered her family and stop them from doing the same to others.
"Roman."
"What?" She needed to hear that name again.
"It was Roman."
Before she could think, she was off. Sprinting the way that she had seen Iel walk off.
But before she broke through the thorns and into the camp, tears erupted from her eyes and she fell to the floor in a heap. She pulled herself up, sobs wracking through her body, and staggered down a slope and into a tree. She curled up against the tree and let her misery consume her.
She didn't know how long she sat in her own tears, but when she came out of it the sun lay high and proud in the sky; mocking her.
She stood up slowly and brushed away the dirt from her clothes, scolding herself as she did so. She had wasted precious time with her own needs. Angrily, she brushed away her almost dried tears with the back of her slender hands and dragged her fingers through her hair.
Rule 1: Self-control.
She could almost hear Gideon's voice hissing in her ear to pull it together.
She took a breath to steady her heart and took a step forwards, then another and another until she came upon the hill that she had fell down in her blind rage and sadness. Another breath was taken and she hoisted herself up, holding onto anything she could find.
Once up and feeling accomplished, she started down the path that led to camp. She turned a corner and froze when she spotted a movement up ahead of her. Then another.
Silently, she drew Valkyrie and crept forwards; keeping to the bushes as she went.
The side of her mind that was a monster prayed that it was one of Romans puppets up ahead, better even if it was Roman himself.
She shook the thought away, she wasn't that lucky. She focused on the moment at hand, and heard a twig snap and a muffled curse that sounded oddly familiar.
Peering from behind a tree, her eyes fell upon someone's dark brown boots.
The man was caught off guard when she launched her self at him.She pushed him to the ground and then, to her dismay, saw stark white hair and a familiar face.
Still holding her sword to his throat she stared down at him in shock, she could have killed him.
"Iel! What are you doing here?" He stared right back at her with wide blue eyes.
"Looking for you! Where have you been?" Registering his words, she rolled off of him and sent Valkyrie back to it's sheath.
"Busy." She declared faintly and stared at the ground in front of his feet as he got up. Once up, he looked down at her worriedly. She worked her jaw and without looking at him decided to speak.
