Names are easily the most important thing about a character, with personality close behind. The first thing people generally notice about a character is the name. Warriors names are constructed simply; with a prefix and a suffix. When a cat is not yet out of the nursery, their name is their prefix with the set suffix "kit" and then as an apprentice it would be <prefix>paw. As warriors, cats are assigned a unique suffix, such as "pelt" or "pool". If a cat happens to ascend to leader, they gain the suffix "star" representing a connection to and the blessing of StarClan.
A name describes a character, and sometimes that's through looks, personality, or something special that has a connection to that cat. A name must be:
a. Realistic. Warrior cats don't know what mythical creatures are, so don't name a cat Dragonsoul! And, yes, sadly I've seen an OC with that name. In short, they can't be anything that a cat with no knowledge of anything outside an uncivilized forest would know not know about.
b. Relevant. This means the name has to relate to the character, for instance I wouldn't name an orange tabby "Rainfur". Names generally are centered around looks, but Oakheart was based on where he was born. In an oak tree. Also, Tigerstar was named from how his mother thought he would be strong, like a tiger.
c. Probable. You may name an OC Silentheart (I've seen it) but why? Why would a mother name a kit Silentkit? That's a little mean. If the were mute, maybe, but that's basically pointing out the character's flaws! And anyway, Silent is not a valid prefix. So, try to think of a name from the kit's mother's perspective.
Now, this narrows down your options a fair bit. But, there are so many creative names just waiting to be made! A thing that bothers me is when people cast aside a perfectly good prefix like "Gray" or "Bird" because it's overused or uncreative. But really, simple names are better than unrealistic ones!
There are many, many great, underused prefixes and suffixes out there. Don't shun simpler and more normal names for excessive and stupid ones. In short, any name, following the three rules, is fine.
