So, a personality is basically the second (maybe first) most important thing about an OC. Personalities, well, define your characters! No one wants to read about a character who has no flaws, simply due to the fact that you can't relate to them.
Some ways to get inspiration for personalities is from books, movies, and sometimes people you know. There is not a single person in the world who doesn't have flaws. So in this chapter I'll show you how to: brainstorm a main idea, add traits, and edit. First, let's analyze a common character's personality.
Firestar. Leader of Thunderclan, Mary-Sue, blah blah blah. So, let's start with strengths; Firestar is brave, intelligent, and loyal. But even characters who seem un-flawed like him do have weaknesses. For example, he's too trusting. Cloudpaw, Greystripe, Scourge... All cats he assumed would put the clan/him/ethics before their own desires. He saw the good in everyone, especially cats the he shouldn't have.
Now, to begin a personality, think of a trait. Any good one. For this, I'll use dedicated. Next, think of related traits. So for me I'll do compassionate and honest. Flaws are next; to get these from your personality frame there are two main methods. The first one is to exaggerate a good trait until it's over the top and bad. Dedicated becomes not letting go, compassionate becomes too caring and selfless, and honest to bad at keeping secrets/really open. Second method: pick random but compatible flaws, like the opposites of the good traits, so sort of the opposite where the character's strong suit lies. For instance for my made up personality I would use overly cautious and somewhat oblivious.
There, you have it! That's my process!
BUT the chapter is not over!
Some positive traits: intelligent, optimistic, perseverant, encouraging, empathetic, open, selfless, trustworthy, inventive, dedicated, loyal, stands up for their friends, agreeable, adaptive, charismatic, articulate, appreciative, confident, curious, daring, dignified, eloquent, efficient, energetic, forgiving, focused, fair, generous, gracious, hardworking, humble, independent, insightful, logical, liberal, listens to others, mature, observant, original, patient, peaceful, rational, responsible, witty, and... yeah that's enough positive ones.
Some negative traits: abrasive, aloof, apathetic, blunt, careless, childish, cold, compulsive, cynical, deceitful, destructive, discontented, dishonest, dogmatic, egocentric, easily discouraged, fanatical, fickle, forgetful, greedy, graceless, hateful, hostile, ignorant, indecisive, insecure, irresponsible, lazy, loquacious, malicious, miserable, mannerless, negative, narcissistic, narrow-minded, obnoxious, obsessive, paranoid, possessive, power-hungry, prejudiced, reactive, rigid, sadistic, shallow, submissive, tense, troublesome, unappreciative, uncooperative, unrealistic, unstable, vague, vindictive, willful, and I'm done now.
So now that you have some methods and traits, here are some final tips for cleaning up a character's personality:
-Be specific. Everyone, and every character is (should be), unique. Everyone has their little quirks and characters should too.
-Don't just give flaws/strengths. Give an equal amount.
-Make sure that the strengths and flaws work together. For instance; an empathetic cat wouldn't be selfish/narcissistic. They need to be realistic and compatible.
-Personalities should be relevant to a character's backstory, for example: if a character was betrayed by a friend they'd try to be trustworthy and loyal themselves.
-Avoid used/cliche Warriors personalities! Like, 'caring and kind when around their friends, but fierce in battle!' there are so many of those oh my god
I think that's it... Again, I'm accepting reviews/critique (cONSTRUCTIVE PLEASE).
Happy OC making!!
