An: Hello guys this is the history behind the story.. So enjoy..
The book takes place after WWIII. The USA, which is where the book takes place, has been taken over by Britain. They picked the Stone family to rule over the USA. As you may have realized we are more advanced in tech. So ruling was a lot easier with the right tools. 30 years into the new monarchy some people couldn't take the laws that were passed, (like the princess act*) and decided to start the rebellion. The book actually is 12 years after the start of the rebellion (42 years of monarchy). The rebellion's original objective was to overthrow the monarchy peacefully, or at least get them to make a truce and get the people's say back in the government. It was forced to be violent when the King said guards could kill, arrest any of the rebels. Which forced them into the safety of the forest. When chief Lane (the chief before Rose) took over the rebel base, he issued the rule of bearing arms.
*The Princess Act:
The princess act was passed for whenever no place wanted to make allies the Prince would look through the eligible girls and pick the one he wanted most.
