The guys are still staring at me with questioning looks on their faces as Murray closes the door.
I'm glad that girl Abby left, but I shudder at guessing how far she would have gone if the guys didn't get back in time. Or if I didn't fight to defend myself. Clearly, she's delusional. How obsessed do you have to be to find out where we live, go there, and break in? Oh, and then threaten me so she can get what she wants. And what she wants? Them. I swallow slowly.
Picking the ring up off the floor, I smile softly at it, and then hold it up for my friends to see.
"This thing right here. This little piece of metal is what saved my life. Well, maybe not my life, but it did help." I smile, still a little awed at the jewelry. And myself.
The guys all move over to the couches and sit down, waiting. I can see that I'm not getting off the hook by only giving few details, so I dive in, telling them what happened.
"...And then I heard a noise coming from downstairs. At first, I thought it was you guys, coming home early. But when I called out, no one was answering so I went down the stairs to find out who it was."
"What? You went to check on the noise by yourself? That's stupid, Alexa! Why didn't you call us or call the police?" Q interjects.
Sal replied before I could, speaking quietly, "She broke her phone, there was no way for her to call us. Continue."
"Well, that girl--her name is Abby--she's a big fan apparently and she wanted to know where you guys were. She tried to hit me, I tried to leave, trying to get help, but she grabbed me before I could escape. Anyways, I ending up punching her, using the ring as a weapon. And it worked! Oh, and I used a freaking umbrella and a lamp as protection, but the important thing was that the wedding ring cut her face a little bit and I defended myself. Then you guys came in and she left."
The guys sit back in astonishment, stewing over what I just told them.
"By the way, I'm thinking that we should probably change the locks. On the account that Abby said she was able to pick the lock on the door and come right in."
Joe says, "Well, we're going to have to do more than that. If we change the locks, she can still just pick that lock too. We'll have to call the police and report this. And maybe get a security alarm or something."
Murr says with a southern accent, "Your securr'ity is my number one priority." He grins, thinking he's so clever, and we all laugh a little bit.
"Oh! And I guess the impact from the blow made the ring come off my finger." I grin, "I'm grateful for this little ring and I'm also grateful that it's finally off. It's not stuck anymore."
"Well, I'm grateful that you were thinking quickly on your feet. Glad that she didn't hurt you too much," Sal frowns.
"Ah, man," Q says with a smirk. "Does this mean we're not married anymore?"
~~~
And Q and I are not married anymore!
We're back home, after just leaving the court house. The court house where the judge annulled our marriage.
The rest of the month flew by, and finally I'm a single women again. Well, single in the marriage sense. But now, technically, in a relationship. Because me not being married to Q anymore, means that I'm with Sal, officially.
Finally.
As Q and I walk in the front door, Sal peers at me, waiting, and when I nod my head, he runs over to me, grinning, throwing his arms around me. I'm suffocated in his embrace, barely being able to breathe, but Sal is so happy, and I am so happy, that I don't do anything, but grin and hug him back.
