"Dean! Dean, hey!" Dean saw his brother approach him down the long white corridor, calling out for him. Dean halted in his tracks and waited for his giant moose of a sibling to catch up.
"What'd you want, Sammy?"
"You don't have to do the surgery on," he lifted up a piece of paper from his clipboard and read off of it, "Mrs. Bradbury, 27 years old, also has asthma, room 34a. I've got another Doctor on it."
"Why?" Dean said, offended.
"I thought it was a simple enough procedure to go along with, simpler than the normal. He's new. I think you'll like him."
"He stole my friggin' shift, yeah, I'm sure I'll love the guy."
Sam sent him a coy look, eyebrows raised. Then he huffed out, turning slightly away. "Okay, we'll see. And I'll see you later to discuss Dad-"
"Not now. Sammy. Not during work. Don't say his name."
Before either brother could say anything further on the matter, Sam's name was called out in request for him to go into another surgery and take over.
"Later, jerk."
"Bitch."
The brothers walked away in opposite directions, Dean deciding he needed some strong coffee and a power nap before tonight's rowdy lot were bound to come in.
He turned several corners on autopilot; he'd been at this hospital for years now and he certainly knew it better than the back of his hand. Despite there being a lot of people working around here, Dean could never find anyone to settle with. Sam had. Of course he had. But Dean? No one wanted the ex-manwhore.
It was like his actions over 10 years ago still effected how staff saw him today, sometimes. One desperate mistake and one person to start the stories and rumours was all it took. He was sick of it. That's why he wanted the transfer.
While he was thinking about if he'd get the acceptance letter back, Dean was waiting for the cup to fill up to the top. Next to him, he noticed, was a man hitting the dispensing machine, a pack of gum stuck and hadn't fallen. "You need some help there?" Dean offered, walking over with the coffee in hand.
"No, no I'm fine thanks, it just needs a-" he pushed it diagonally and the pack of gum fell. The man stood up, his barely brushed brown hair flopped on his forehead a little, and also was contrast to his smart doctor uniform, then smugly smiled down. "There."
Dean should've walked away at that point. He had no more he needed to do. He'd offered and now he could leave with his drink then get back to work.
"Are you new here, Doctor...?" Dean found himself asking.
When the Doctor turned to face him, Dean focused on the blue of them. The bright shimmering blue of his eyes. Damn it.
"It's Doctor Novak, and yes, I'm new here Doctor...?"
"Winchester. Call me Dean, though, as my brother works here and neither of us have married to change names," he explained in a sort of rushed way. Then he found himself getting nervous, thumbing the cup and shuffling from foot to foot. "I bet it would be him that changes it but since he's with a chick, that just leaves me."
Way to go, Dean. Introducing yourself like that. Luckily, Dr. Novak seemed unfazed.
"Brother? Must be hard to work in the same place as him and keep the balance of the brotherly conversation."
"Sometimes, yeah." Dean began walking in the direction of his study and gestured for the other Doctor to follow. "You got any?"
"I'm one of six, and only one sister."
