Chapter 1

Sunkit nosed herself deeper into her mothers fur. Redkit squealed in protest.

Sunkit slowly opened her eyes. Another pair stared straight into hers.

"Sunkit! Your eyes are open!" Redkit exclaimed. Sunkit blinked. So this was her sister. Redkit was dark orange and as she flicked her tail Sunkit noticed that it was red. Glancing at herself she saw that she was orange and white.

Sunkit suddenly felt a shift in her mother as Brightfire stood up. Left on the floor she looked at her mother who looked a lot like herself. Only difference was that Brightfire's coat was light orange but she had a white undercoat.

"Brightfire!" A fiery red tom said as he entered the nursery with a mouse. His amber eyes swept over the two kits.

"Sunkit's eyes are open!" He meowed. Brightfire purred.

"Thanks for the mouse, Flameeye, and yes, they just opened." Brightfire meowed with a happy gaze.

Flameeye nodded. He purred as Redkit gave a tiny hiss when he sniffed her.

"Oh Brightfire, they're wonderful. I can tell, they will do great things for the clan!" Flameeye exclaimed.

2 moons later

"Redkit! Stop that!" Sunkit meowed, her tone filled with annoyance. Redkit looked crestfallen but stopped playing with Sunkit's tail.

Brightfire closed her eyes briefly. "Kits, why don't you explore the camp?" She meowed. Sunkit and Redkit bounded out of the den before their mother changed her mind. The patrols had already left but they could still look around.

"Hey, I know, let's go to the medicine den! Scorchtongue and Starpaw have to still be in camp!" Redkit meowed to Sunkit. Sunkit nodded and followed her sister as they scampered to the den.

"Starpaw, did you find the juniper berry I asked you to get?" The kits heard Scorchtongue ask. Starpaw's clear voice answered him.

"Yes." She meowed to him. Sunkit scooted past her sister and peered into den. Starpaw and Scorchtongue's back were to them.

"This is boring, come on. I want to see the leader's den!" Redkit meowed to Sunkit.

Sunkit ran ahead if her but they both came to a stop at the entrance of Blazestar's den. Redkit sniffed the air.

"It's empty." She confirmed. Sunkit purred and darted inside. Redkit looked around the den in disappointment. "It's just a nest."

The two kits ran out. "Maybe the warriors den?" Sunkit asked Redkit. Redkit nodded and her eyes shined.

This time the kits both ran in and found Emberfoot asleep in his nest. Redkit purred to herself and Sunkit's eyes narrowed as she eyed her sister.

"What are you planning?"

"Nothing."

"I know that look, Redkit." Sunkit pointed out and Redkit sighed and then brightened.

"Want to help me put fire ants in Emberfoot's nest?" Redkit asked her. Sunkit looked appalled.

"Redkit! We can't do that!" Sunkit meowed.

"That's why it's not a we, just me." Redkit meowed and she stood taller. Sunkit rolled her eyes.

"Ok, but be careful."

"I will. What's the worst that could happen?"

"Not becoming an apprentice?" Sunkit meowed and Redkit purred.

"I'll become an apprentice. Besides, it will be fun!" Redkit meowed, trying to convince her sister. Sunkit shook her head and left Redkit to dig up the ants.

Sunkit walked back to the nursery but paused as the patrol came back with fresh kill.

Sunkit turned around and saw a scared Redkit running to her. Sunkit purred as Redkit glared at her.

"Don't say it."

"Told you so." Sunkit meowed in triumph. Redkit was about to answer but stayed quiet as Brightfire herded them into the nursery.
