Chapter 10
Sunpaw woke to the coughing of cats. All the other apprentices were awake and staring out of the den. Sunpaw stretched before seeing what they were doing. She gasped at the sight. Cats were all around the clearing, coughing loudly.
"It's terrible, isn't it?" Forestpaw meowed quietly, and Sunpaw startled as the she-cat sat beside her. Smoothing her fur down she looked back to the clearing.
"Yes." Sunpaw answered back after a moments thought. Had the greencough spread during the night? Or was it coming from other clans?
"You seem thoughtful." Forestpaw meowed as she gazed at Sunpaw. Sunpaw nodded slowly.
"I was just thinking, did it come from the other clans? Or how did it get here?" Sunpaw meowed, looking at Forestpaw while she meowed. Forestpaw's eyes narrowed and Weedpaw looked to the two she-cats.
"Greencough sneaks up on cats during leaf-fall and leaf-bare." Weedpaw murmured so quietly Sunpaw almost didn't hear. He continued as they watched the medicine cats run around the clearing. "If caught when its whitecough, you can cure it before it becomes greencough. Greencough doesn't always mean death, but when it's blackcough...." Weedpaw meowed, his eyes darkening.
Treepaw suddenly jumped to his paws and the other apprentices watched him in surprise. His amber eyes fixed themselves on ours. "No more talk of this!" He hissed, his tail lashing. "We should be helping our clan! Lets hunt so they can all have strength to fight the sickness!" Treepaw meowed loudly. His eyes were filled with pain and he stalked out of the den. Forestpaw sighed and she looked sad.
"He'll never get over her..." She meowed softly and her eyes glistened. Sunpaw looked at her friend in confusion and Weedpaw nodded.
"We will always remember Petalpaw." He meowed. Seeing Sunpaw's expression he answered her silent questions.
"Petalpaw was our sister. She died a while ago and Treepaw loved her..." Weedpaw meowed, letting out a sigh.
"How?" Sunpaw asked. Forestpaw looked at Sunpaw through narrowed eyes.
"Fox."
Sunpaw quickly got to her paws and she ran out of the den, Forestpaw and Weedpaw right behind her. They sensed what she was about to do and they found Treepaw in the forest.
"Glad you came." He grunted. A mouse lay at his paws and the apprentices fanned out around the forest, trying to catch as much as they could.
In the end they had four mice, a sparrow, and a squirrel. Taking it back to camp, they found two cats laying still in the middle of the clearing. Sunpaw did a double look as she noticed that though they looked like they were sleeping, they were still. The healthy cats moved around the camp slowly, eyes to the ground.
Sunpaw watched them as she put down her mouse and sparrow. Only time would tell how it would help.
