"Your outfit Philip." William appeared again at my door. He lay the outfit out on my bed and I thanked him. He left as quickly as he had entered, sensing I was in no mood for idle chit chat like usual. That was one of the things I loved about William, he got people, he understood me better than even my parents.
I looked at the black tux and nodded approvingly at his choice, I knew he would get it right. I slipped into it and just as I was rearranging my bow tie I heard a wolf whistle.
I jumped and looked to see Dan stood outside my door with a cheeky grin on his face. I flushed bright red."Don't worry, I didn't see you getting changed," he told me and I felt my face heat up even more at the thought that Dan could've seen me in my underwear had he arrived a few moments earlier.
"Ugh. Do you ever give up?" I questioned as I had never known someone to go through this much trouble just to torment someone's life with their presence. I'd only met him yesterday but he was already irritating me, I wished he had never introduced himself to me and just stayed out of my way like all the other servants.
"Not on a hot piece of ass like you." He winked but I ignored him by turning back to the mirror in front of me. "Nice suit," he tried again.
"Thank you," I replied and I heard him chuckle. He saw he was winning, he had gotten me to talk to him, that was enough.Maybe he wasn't all bad after all, maybe he just wanted someone to talk to. I know a lot of servants here don't make friends, it can get awfully lonely. Even for me. I had never had a real friend before, William was the closest I had gotten to one and he was my tailor! He wasn't a friend, he was just someone who dressed me up for balls and weddings and, in the worst cases, funerals.
"Going someone nice?" Dan perked up, I turned to him.
"Not that it's any of your concern but yes, I am going to a ball." I don't know why I told him this information but it slipped out of me.
Even though I said it in a non-friendly way, Dan's response showed that he paid no attention to the actual tone in my voice but worked off of the words I spoke.
"I'm catering a ball tonight. Maybe it's the same one." He winked at me and I rolled my eyes.I had every intention to kick him out of my room before I noticed that he wasn't actually in my room. I looked down at his feet to see he was stood just outside my door, he was respecting my personal space so I decided to let the wink slide.
"Maybe so." I rolled my eyes. Once again, Dan paid no attention to my social cues and continued to smile widely.
"I'll see you there. Hopefully."
"Yeah..." I trailed off.I actually hoped he wouldn't be there, I couldn't afford any distractions and Dan was a major distraction. If he were there I was sure he would interrupt my dances with his inappropriate behaviour.
"See you soon, Philly." I stared after him as he left.
Did he really just call me that? Since when do people give the prince nicknames? They need special permission when it comes down to just saying my name without the prince title never mind giving me a nickname... but I liked it. I liked that Dan defied any customs that are usually in place here, it made me feel almost normal.Dan's carefree attitude was dangerous to me because I could feel myself becoming more infatuated by him. As annoying as he is, he fills an empty hole that has been present in my chest for such a long time. It makes me want to have a friend. It makes me want to get to know Dan.
This would be absurd to anyone - a prince and a servant are never to get along. We are binary opposites. Maybe in another time, another place, we would be able to do whatever we wished. But not here."Who was that?" William was at the door, stood in the place where Dan had once been.
"No one," I told him almost instantly. "He's just a servant."An:
