A/N: my authors note at the end of this chapter is very important!
Book update brought to you by Andy's fabulous eyebrows 🙈😏
By the way, a dressing gown is a 'bath robe', if u prefer that...I picked up my new companion and felt his claws slightly dig into my finger. He was quite big- about the size of a ruler, from head to toe, er, beak to claw.
I wonder why Thana gave him to me? Also, what's his name? And how do I take care of him?! He didn't exactly come with an instruction manual, only a piece of paper with a few words on it written by an Ancient Vampire Goddess.
Maybe Andy will know what to do.I kept the crow perched on my finger and walked across the hallway into Andy's room. He was sitting up in his bed, scribbling something down on a notepad. "Hey Andy, look what Thana gave me."
He didn't look up, "if it's something dead, I want it out of my room."
My winged companion cawed, making Andy jump and look up with wide eyes. "It's a man eater; grab your most loved possessions and run!" He shrieked, then picked up a batman teeshirt (I'm pretty sure it's the one he stole off of me after he tackled me that day in the mall) and ran out of his bedroom, also, the fact that he was wearing a blue dressing gown didn't do anything to stop my laughs.
It was quite comical, really. Especially when, after he sprinted pass me, the crow started to chase him all around the house. How he managed to not trip over his long dressing gown while the bird was mercilessly swooping at him is a mystery to me.
"This... thing keeps chasing me! It's so damn creepy! It's like my own shadow! Get it away, Candice!!" Andy yelled as he pulled me into the kitchen and used me as a human shield.
I scrunched my eyebrows together and thought. "What did you say just then?"
"Get it away, Candice?" Andy repeated.
"No, before that."
"It's so damn creepy?"
"No! After that."
"It's like my own shadow?"
It's like my own shadow. A crow is like a shadow- my new companion is like a shadow. Dark, silent, and always with you. Shadow is like my own shadow...
I clicked my fingers together and nodded. "That's the one."
Andy frowned in confusion. "What?"
"Shadow. His name's Shadow." I nodded towards the crow. He flew towards me and landed on my shoulder, silently observing the world around him, or the oak-themed kitchen in my case.
Andy nodded in what seemed to be agreement. "I like it. I'm not sure if I like him, though. If the animal doesn't stop chasing me around, I might just have to use it as a snack." He scowled at Shadow. The crow loudly cawed at him.
Oh dear, I can see an argument starting to simmer. "Andy, calm down. You're just going to have to deal with Shadow."
"What's his purpose, anyway? Why did Thana give you a goddamn eagle?"
"He's a crow."
"Fine, why did Thana give you a crow?" I answered him by showing him the note that came along with the bird. "So that's it? Take care of him and he'll be a loveable pet? You're kidding me." He chucked the note onto the kitchen counter.
I scratched the crows neck, making his feathers fluff up. "Well, he is pretty cute."
"What's his purpose? Is he carrying a hidden message?" Andy gripped the back of his midnight black hair and frustratingly tugged at it.
