Bubbles

It all happened in slow motion,
from Shore everything seemed fine.
But then his eyes grew wide with fear,
he drifted too far over the line.
The water suddenly grew treacherous, more fearful with each attempted breath. You have a second to let everyone know,
call their attention to life or death.
Every second is crucial,
even though a lifetime it may seem.
To urgently grab their attention,
you're going to need to scream.
You can want it with every fiber of your being,
but often times there's trouble.
You can let out every ounce of fear,
and all that emerges is bubbles.
You can beg and beg for help,
but the drowning just remain silent.
The problem that most people don't realize, is that pain is not always violent.
I watched as his desperation,
rose as only air.
So although it didn't send chills down your spine,
it doesn't mean it couldn't compare.

I watched all these years later,
As that no longer little boy walked into the room.
He smiled, and laughed, and joked with his friends,
like those Waters could never consume.
He turned to look at me,
and I knew he was drowning in his struggles.
Because he opened his mouth to say hi,
and all that came out, was bubbles.
