We were perfect for each other.
People told us all the time.
But we just threw our heads back in laughter and told them they were obsessed.
We said we didn't know anything about each other.
We acted like we never thought about it.
We let them think they were crazy.
We told them they were imagining things.
We said we never even noticed that we laughed the same way, with our noses scrunched and head thrown back in weightlessness with a bubbling giggle.
We said we never knew the other stared when we looked away.
But they never saw how much it hurt when they said the others name.
There was no way for them to know they were the only thought consistently going through our heads everyday.
They never knew we had every detail memorized and every laugh line traced in our mind.
They teased and laughed but they never knew.
They never knew because we can't read minds.
And maybe that was the problem.
Because while we were thinking of the things they didn't know, we forgot to think about the things we didn't know.
We didn't know we weren't the only ones.
Every tease, dream, tear, pain, laugh, sigh...
It was all mutual.
We thought it was our thoughts and our thoughts only.
So maybe if we weren't so good at acting.
If we weren't so strong under pressure.
If only we cracked once at a taunting remark.
It was both of our worst fear, but if we let a weakness show...
Maybe we wouldn't have to throw our head back and laugh at them anymore.
Maybe we wouldn't have just walked past each other so many times.
Maybe you could be more than my personal joke for them to watch my cheeks turn red.
Maybe we could have told them they were right.
But instead, we walk past and smile.
We smile at their imagination, without knowing it could've been real.
