Chapter 17 Caught off Guard

LUNCH
Two days later and it's the night of Brianna's opening of her second studio. We've both been so busy with getting the finish touches for the opening that we totally forgot about our dresses. We get in my car and head downtown to find something sexy but classy. This opening is a black tie affair so of course me and Bri has to go all out. As me and Brianna search for dresses, Bri gets a call from George saying he's coming to the opening with his wife Christina and his two girls. Immediately I get a knot in my stomach, I was all prepared for him coming to the opening but not meeting his family. I'm barley getting use to him now he wants to add 3 more people to the equation? Brianna sees my face "it's going to be alright, I had no idea he wanted to bring his wife and daughters. I didn't know how to say no. Don't worry all we have to do is say hey and move on. This is our night and we don't have to socialize if we don't want to." I laugh at her, she always makes me smile when I'm about to go off. We continue to look for dresses. I finally found the dress, it's a long white tight gown it's heaven white. In the front of the dress it's v-neck cut that stops at the top of my belly. I wasn't going for this much chest out but this dress is gorgeous, I couldn't help but get it. It fits me like a glove, hugging every inch of my curvy body. Me and Brianna walk out the fitting room at the same time, she has on a black tight fit gown. "This is the first time I'm wearing black and you're wearing white, are we switching roles?" She's so silly, I tell her to spend around I want to see how it fits her. She's all covered in the front up to her neck but when she turns around, the dress shows all back, it's so sexy. We head back in the dressing rooms, put our gowns on a hanger and head to the register. We finally get to the register and I hear a voice calling my name, me and Bri looks around but couldn't see anyone the store is packed. We pay for our dresses and head to the door when some lady grabs my arm "Shelby hey" , I look at her in confusion I have no idea who she is. "Yes, do I know you?", me and Brianna is waiting for the lady response when two other ladies come up to us. "No you don't know me, I'm George wife Christina and these are our two daughters Blake and Yasmine. I don't mean to catch y'all off guard, but we're shopping for your event tonight. When I saw y'all come out the fitting rooms, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet y'all before tonight. I'm really excited to meet y'all and have two more daughters in my life." I really didn't know what to say, I wasn't planning on meeting them so early I needed time to rehearse my act. "Well this is surely a surprise me and Shelby wasn't expecting to see you all until tonight. I hope y'all found gowns, this store is amazing and has lovely things. Umm well me and Shelby was about to get some lunch would y'all like to join us, we can drive y'all there?" I smile at them, but all I really want to do was sucker punch Brianna in the face. "Like my sister said we're about to do lunch, y'all should join us. We should get to know a little bit about each other before tonight's opening." Brianna looks at me in shock she has no idea why I'm acting so mature all of a sudden or why I'm being nice, but I know this meal will be coming out her pocket. We leave the store in silence, an awkward vibe came upon us. I go get my car from the parking lot leaving Brianna, Christina, Blake and Yasmine there waiting for me. I get in my car and have a mini panic attack. I can't believe I'm having lunch with my father mistress and their kids, when has my life become such s circus. Just when I thought I was getting back on track poof here comes mommy dearest and the stepsisters. I try to call Chris but he hasn't answer me in weeks I really don't know what that's about but I will handle that later, plus he's coming to Brianna opening night. I want to call Drew so bad but what's the point he's in Canada with Tiffany. Deep in my thoughts I hear my phone ring, it's Brianna asking me if I'm alright and where's the car. She said I've been gone for more than 15 minutes and since I didn't park far it shouldn't take that long. I snap out of my daze fix my makeup and pick them up. Brianna hops in the front and the rest sit in the back, the car ride was really wired no one talked. We get to the restaurant get our seats and order food. Brianna dives right into the questions, she makes me so proud. "So Yasmine and Blake tell me and Shelby a little bit about y'all, we really can't stay to long because we have so much to get done before tonight opening" they stare at us like we're aliens that kidnapped them. "Blake and I are two years apart, I'm 22 and Blake is 24. We are getting our masters, I'm majoring in advertisement business management and Blake is majoring in culinary arts pastries to be exact. We also work, Blake just got transferred up here to a highly known pastry bakery restaurant downtown. I got transferred to a P.R firm that advertise things." I look at them in awe, they really did well for themselves have their own money good degrees and careers. "Yeah my girls did so well for themselves, I'm so proud of them. Y'all father told me about y'all accomplishments, all I can say is my girls got it going on right." I tap Brianna leg how dare she say my girls we aren't your girls we are Evelyn girls. Brianna can feel my rage and squeeze my leg to simmer down like I'm some soup cooking on the stove. "When I got the news that my boss transferred me to a position up here, I was excited finally I can meet my daughters. My long lost daughters at that. You don't know how long I've wanted to meet y'all, how I wanted this family." Right now I'm getting so annoyed with her, she's killing me with all this mommy dearest act. You knew about us since we was 3 don't act like we was lost and you found us. Brianna is squeezing my hand now, she knows I'm about to go off on this lady. "I understand your excited that's all good, but let's not get things twisted. You and George had an affair which led to him leaving my mom me and Brianna that's one. Two, we aren't your daughters you have two of your own. Three we aren't your girls, we are Evelyn ladies. Four you and George knew about us so it's kind of strange that y'all reached out to us because y'all moved here. I often wonder would y'all have contacted us if you would of stayed in Atlanta. Five, we aren't a family, yes I did forgive George and you but that doesn't mean I forgot. Finally this is me being nice. So if you want to go back and tell George how rude Shelby was remember this is nothing compared to how nasty I can actually get. Oh and P.S George actually apologized for breaking up a family and leaving us but not once have you ever uttered the word sorry. Now that we got that out the way, me and Brianna will see y'all tonight." I put money on the table for the tab, the tip and to get them home. I walk out without looking back.
