(Mackenzie's POV)
"Well Katy dear, it's not a bad idea. What's the worst that could happen? You seen how terrified she was, do you really want that to happen again? It's not healthy, if you want to start this "happy family" you go on about then you can't have interferences like today." "I know and I get that but I'm just thinking about it from both Mackenzie and her birth mums point of views. How would I feel if someone told me I could never see my child/mother again. It would crush me." "Katy I get that but it's a totally different situation, me and your father supported you there was always a bond and love in this house, it clearly wasn't the same for Mackenzie and her mother obviously doesn't care what's happening with Mackenzie or she'd be fighting for her kid and she wouldn't have locked her up to begin with." "Fine. I'll talk to her about it but no promises." I lay back down in the bed I woke up in after the conversation ends. I don't know how I got here or even if it's the same day all I remember was shaking and crying because of what happened at the cafe. I roll off the bed and sluggishly head towards the door and go downstairs, I don't normally suck my thumb that's for babies in my mind, but it's comforting at the moment. I look around the kitchen and the only person there is Mary but she hasn't spotted me. I walk into the living room. And stand in the doorway, grandma Ann is in her chair watching the TV. "Katy! You have a wandering child here." She yells out. Katy comes in from Mary and Keith's room. "How are you feeling?" She crouched down to my hight and pulls my thumb out of my mouth. "Bad." I respond quickly so I can put my now cold wet thumb back in my warm mouth where it suddenly feels like it belongs. "Don't do that, you'll get crooked teeth like me, we'll get you something else you can use as a comfort but not your fingers." She says softly and tugs my thumb back out of my mouth. She opens her arms for a hug and I wrap my arms around her neck and rest my head on her shoulder. She scoops me and and walks into the living room and sits on the couch with me on her lap. I'm still facing forwards so I push my feet and ankles between the top and bottom cushions of the couch. Katy pulls me off her so I'm sitting on her lap facing her. "How did you feel about today?" Why does she always ask me how I feel? She grabs my hands and holds then in hers, I know it's just so I don't suck my thumb again. "Sad." I look down at our hands and try get a hand loose. "Stop, I just want to talk to you, you don't have to be scared or upset." I relax my hands again. "How would you feel if I told you that you couldn't see your birth mum anymore?" I look at Katy and she cringes slightly. "I would be happy." "Really? You'd never see her again? That would make you happy?" "Yes." "Why would that make you happy?" "Because I have a new family now that I love and I don't want my old family hurting me and my new family." "So if we went and talked to some people about making sure your mum would leave you alone, you'd be okay with talking to those people?" Katy looks relieved. "Will you be there or will I be alone with the strangers?" "No I'll be there, I promise." "Then I don't mind." Katy lets go of my hands and pulls me back into the hug. I hear her whisper under her breath. "I just don't want to hurt you." "You haven't and you won't, I love you." I manage to sneak my thumb back into my mouth, who cares about crooked teeth anyway? "I love you too Mackenzie." I feel her mood get lighter. "That's sweet now can I watch my show?" Grandma Ann speaks up. "Haha sorry grandma. Okay Mackenzie we have somewhere to be." She pulls me back again and catches me off guard. "Fingers Mackenzie!" And she pulls my thumb back out. " don't pretend like you didn't suck your thumb till your late 20's Katy." "Not helping grandma." "Probably isn't helping but it's true." Katy puts me down and grabs my hand. "Mum, she said it's okay so I'm going to take her down now." Katy calls out to Mary. "That's fine dinner should be ready by the time you's are back." Mary turns and smiles at me so I smile back politely. We go to a big brick building and go inside. "Take a seat, A judge will be with you shortly." Says a small fragile looking administration lady.
