(Katy's POV)
I get woken by sound of my phone ringing, it's not my alarm so it must be early. Maybe Tamra's having trouble with the kids? "Hello?" I try clear my throat so I don't sound so exhausted. "Hi, is this Katy Perry?" A small fragile voice asks, great a fans got my number. "Depends, who is this?" "It's uh.. Mackenzie's grandmother. I have some bad news." Bad news? "What kind of bad news?" I ask, still unsure if this is legitimate or a prank call. "Mackenzie's birth parents were in a tragic car accident yesterday and they both passed away, their funeral is tomorrow in LA. If you want to and can you can make it we would appreciate it." "Umm.. Yeah ah.. I'll talk to mackenzie and get back to you but thank you for the call." "Alright dear goodbye." "Bye" I hang up the phone and zone out at the wall for a few seconds. Orlando woke up mid way through the call so he just sits and waits for an explanation. "I think we need to fly back to LA tomorrow?" I say with a blank expression. "What do you mean? Can't we just relax for a day or two? What's so important in LA?" Orlando gets flustered but I don't blame him. "Mackenzie's parents are dead" I can't even think of a nicer way to put that. "Wait. What! What do you mean dead? What happened?" "They were killed in a car accident, that was her grandmother inviting us to the funeral..." "Well are you going to go?" Orlando sits up and turns to face me. "I guess, they are her birth parents. She'll never see them again and I don't want her to blame us when she's older as to way we didn't take her to say goodbye?" "She won't hate us, she can't even stand her mother so don't worry about that. If you want to take her then go ahead but don't do it just because you think she'll hate you if you don't, okay?" "Okay."
(Mackenzie's POV)
I get woken up by Katy brushing my cheek with the back of her hand, I open my eyes and see her sitting on the side of the bed me and Flynn slept in. "Good morning sweetie. Can you sit up and come down stairs? I have something to tell you." Just by the look on Katy's face I can tell it's not a good something. I shuffle off the bed and follow her downstairs. It's only 6:14 am here so Flynn stays in bed. I bump into a few things while I try and rub my eyes and adjust to the bright lights. As we reach the living room area of Tamra's apartment room Katy sits down and points me towards herself so I walk towards her and sit on her lap. "Mackenzie I have something to tell you and it might make you upset and if it does then that's okay you can cry and be upset, it's totally okay. She tucks a lose strand of hair behind my ear so she can see my face but depending on the news I'm not sure I want her to see my face. "So I just got a phone call from your grandma and she told me that your birth mum and dad were in a car accident..." She breaks and checks my reaction before carrying on. "They didn't make it mackenzie.. They've passed away." I zone out and just focus on my breathing. I'm not sure how to feel, I never got along with my mother and my father always blamed me for everything but I still loved him. I don't want to cry, I don't feel like I have a right to cry. I left them and never looked back and now they're gone forever. Despite everything we went through in the last few years they haven't always been this way. There was a time when we all got along like a happy family but things changed and I'm not sure I lost the same parents as I was given at birth so I don't know how to feel. I don't say anything, I don't even move. "It's okay, you're okay. I'm here and Tamra's here so if you want to talk about it you can when you're ready okay? Do you want to go and say goodbye?" I think about for awhile, it would be the only time my now family would get to meet my original family but at the same time that's not necessarily a good thing. I nod anyway, what's the worst that could happen? "Okay, we'll go." Katy kisses my forehead and hugs me tight but I just keep my eyes fixed on the wall in front of me and zone out.
