I gaped at my father, my mouth open.
A few moments passed as everyone's eyes turned to me. I felt my cheeks blaze with color and then, the silence was broken by a shrill scream.
"What? Her?! How? She doesn't even-she's not even-she can't!! It's mine! It's me! It's supposed to be me!" Abbey shouted.
The entire room erupted into whispers and chatter and Lance pushed me forward to get me to start walking towards the stage. My legs felt like jelly as I gingerly climbed the steps towards my father, eyeing him curiously. He had a knowing sparkle in his eye as he placed the crown on top of my head. Trey wasn't looking at me. He had a small smirk on his face while he watched Abbey screaming and causing a commotion. When I stood next to him, he smiled softly at me.
"Please put your hands together for your homecoming king and queen!" my father announced. The room broke into applause and cheers, which drowned out the noise Abbey was making. At the moment, she was trying to fight off the dozen arms that had grasped her and held her back from pouncing on stage and ripping the crown off my head.
"Now, please clear the floor so that our king and queen can lead the next dance," my father said. People moved aside and the arms that held onto Abbey dragged her back. Trey offered me his hand and I took it gingerly, not because I wanted to dance with him, but because I was afraid I'd break my legs walking down the stairs because I was so nervous and confused.
Trey led me to the middle of the dance floor and placed a hand on the small of my back and the other held one of my hands. I placed my free hand on his shoulder and looked up at him. Again, I felt the same electical buzz well up inside of me. I felt him tense a little at my touch and I knew that he was feeling the same emotions that I was.
Before the music started, I stepped away from Trey. He blinked and looked at me confused. I held up a finger as he opened his mouth to say something.
"Give me one second," I said. I walked back where Abbey was fighting the crowd to get at me. People stepped back to let me through and I stood in front of her. She glared at me, her hair coming out of its elegant bun. I took the crown off my head and set it on hers.
"I didn't want this anyway," I told her as her expression changed from anger to confusion. Then I walked back to Trey and resumed my position. The music began.
"I know you've suffered, but I don't want you to hide. It's cold and loveless, I won't let you be denied. Soothing. I'll make you feel pure. Trust me. You can be sure," the song played.
Let me just say that I was never much of a dancer. Ever. So when the music began, and Trey began to lead, I had no idea how my legs started moving with his. I had no clue how my body turned effortlessly in his arms, moving away from him and then back as he pulled me close. I didn't know how I could twirl and dip and jump the way I did as we danced.
It was as if the electricity that passed between the two of us had magically given me the ability to dance. Or perhaps, it was just the fact that it was Trey who I was dancing with. Somehow, I couldn't control myself with him. Rationale was gone. Common sense made no sense. Only emotion ruled.
"Please me, show me how it's done. Trust me. You are the one. I want to reconcile the violence in your heart. I want to recognize your beauty's not just a mask. I want to exorcise the demons from your past. I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart," the song continued. With some last few notes, it ended. Trey held me close to him. I had one leg bent around his waist and he had one hand supporting my hip and the other and my head. Our foreheads touched as we breathed deeply against each other.
I took a chance and opened my eyes and found him looking intently at me. I removed my leg from his waist and stood in front of him, still in extremely close proximity. The room was eerily quiet now as people watched us. He reached up and tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear with shaky hands. His eyes seemed confused, yet his movments were certain.
And then I knew what was going to happen before it happened.
Trey leaned in closer to my face. Abbey let out a shout.
"Trey! No! DON'T!" she yelled.
But it was too late. I had closed the remaining distance between our lips and the moment they touched, the ground began to shake.
A girl let out a shout as a glass punch bowl crashed to the ground, shattering into a thousand pieces. Trey held me close to him and we looked up. The ceiling had opened to reveal the night sky outside. I gasped as I saw the moon, which looked as if it were right on top of the roof. It was so big and luminous. An eerie chill ran through the room and the lights began flickering. The cold breeze blew the candles out and the room was immersed in darkness. The only light came from the moon that towered above our heads.
People were shouting and yelling in all directions, trying to take cover as the ground moved unsteadily. Trey held onto me tightly, his face paler than usual. I glanced at the stage where the teachers were standing. They didn't seem to be preoccupied at all by any of this. It almost seemed like they were oblivious to the chaos that had erupted in the Great Hall.
And then, just as soon as it had begun, it stopped. Everything was still. Silence fell over the students.
And then, I blacked out.
