"Welcome back, class. I hope you enjoyed your little time off, but now you must focus once again," Professor Mika said.

With a flick of her hand, the lights turned off and the projector whirred to life. There was a collective gasp of awe from the students as Mika pulled out a laser pointer.

"Before we begin, let me address one thing: our form of magic does not use wands. Our outlet for magic is our body. You use your hands essentially," Mika explained. "Who can tell me what the first step to performing magic is?" she asked, looking around the room. A girl up front raised her hand.

"Yes, Samantha?" Mika pointed.

"You have to focus your mind and concentrate," Sam answered.

"Correct. You must first focus your mind completely. Block out all other distractions. Once this is done, you focus your mind on the energy you feel inside of you. When you first begin to use magic, this will be a slow process because you first need to focus your mind and then you need to find the magical energy within you," Mika explained.

"But once you are focused and you have located your energy source either inside of you or outside of you, you can now use that energy. What exactly you do with that depends on the spell you use, which you will learn in your Spell Formation class," Mika continued.

A boy named Gregory raised his hand.

"Yes, Gregory?" Mika said.

"How do you know once you've tapped into your energy?" he asked.

"That is an excellent question that I really should not be answering. When you learn to focus your mind, you will learn how to figure out once you've located your energy. But, I will provide a brief explanation for you," Mika replied. She stood at the front of the class, walking back and forth, her footsteps silent on the smooth rock-floors, her robes swishing behind her.

"Figuring out if you have located your magical energy is different for each person. As you will learn, the elements have a large part in magic. That is, water, fire, air, earth and trees, light, etc, etc. If you are using an element as your energy source, you must become one with the element. You will learn soon enough that all living objects are like humans themselves. They have their own souls, their own minds, their own energy. That is why when we use their supply, we must be careful not to kill whatever it is that we're using," Mika explained.

"But to answer your question, it is different for each individual witch or wizard. This is why I cannot exactly explain to you once you've known," she continued. "All right, so moving on now...." she said.

And then the rest of the class period got extremely boring. I sat in my seat, examining the split ends of my hair. I made a mental note to get a hair cut soon. I was acutely aware of Trey next to me. His arm would occasionally brush against mine as he shifted in his seat, clearly bored as well. By the end of class, we were all relieved that the bell rang. Everyone packed up their things, chatter filling the room immediately as Professor Mika shouted out our homework assignment.

"So, is it just me, or is this whole mind control thing kind of freaky?" Lance asked us when we walked out.

"It is really creepy. Just think, what if the teachers can listen in to our minds while we're cursing them out in our minds?" Trey replied.

"I'd be in detention for life," Lance said. We chuckled. "All right. I have Potions now. See you at lunch," Lance said, waving and walking in the opposite direction.

"What class do you have?" I asked Trey, realizing that I didn't know what his schedule was composed of.

"I have History," he replied. I rolled my eyes.
