They had been walking for a while, and they were finally almost off the palace grounds. Devin led the way, holding Blaise close to his chest. He looked uneasy, but so did Blaise and Angelica. Blaise looked the most nervous, resting his head on Devin's shoulder. He knew he'd be injured again if the guards caught them, probably killed this time.
Devin stopped, looking up at the tall brick wall that stood in front of them. This was the end of the palace grounds, a 5 foot brick wall.
"Now what?" Angelica asked, whispering.
"We fly over," Devin said, stepping back.
"You have wings? I don't," Angelica said, looking down.
"You don't have wings? I thought all angels had wings," Devin said, looking confused.
"Can we not talk about this now?" Angelica asked, still looking down.
"Yeah," Devin said, "but I can't carry you both over the wall at the same time. I'll have to leave him on the ground for a minute or two unprotected..." he said, glancing at Blaise.
"It's fine, there's no one around," Blaise said, noticing the uneasy look that had crossed Angelica's face.
"There's no one around now, but you aren't exactly the luckiest person in the world, are you?" Devin pointed out.
"Well let's do it now then, while there isn't anyone around," Blaise said, sounding annoyed.
"Got it," Devin said whilst summoning his wings. His wings were huge and feathered, bright white even in the dim evening light.
Angelica gawked at them, awestruck. She knew that they were just the average wings almost all angels had, but she still was awestruck every time she saw a pair of the beautiful feathered wings. Of course she was jealous, she was one of the few angels born without them.
Devin leaped, his wings beating the air and effortlessly lifting him and Blaise over the wall. Moments later, he landed on the ground in front of her again, empty handed. "Ready?" He asked, like it was no big deal.
"Yeah," Angelica said, trying not to sound too excited. She walked over to him and he picked her up gently, then leaped into the air. She loved the feeling of the wind in her face, closing her eyes. Almost as soon as it started though, it was gone as he landed on the ground on the other side of the wall, setting her back down on the ground and retracting his wings again. They were in a wooded area.
She turned her head, spotting Blaise sitting and leaning on the wall. "Hey again," he smiled weakly, looking lightheaded again.
"Are you alright?" She asked, walking over to him and kneeling on the ground.
"Fine," he strained slightly, closing his eyes for a moment.
"You don't look very fine," Devin said, kneeling next to Angelica.
"I'm fine," Blaise repeated, still straining. He leaned his head back against the wall, closing his eyes again.
"You're lying," Angelica said, "Lightheaded?"
"Mm-hmm," he said, not opening his eyes, "just give me a minute...."
"Is it your leg?" Devin asked, causing Angelica to remember what Cadance had told them.
"Look at his left calf," Angelica said to Devin.
"No no, that can wait," Blaise strained.
Devin ignored him, rolling up his pant leg to his knee. His calf was extremely bloody, a large stab wound in the center of all the blood. It looked like the knife had been twisted around, tearing the muscle from the bone.
