Reason to Smile.

I picked Ava up so she could visit her Lolo with a huge smile plastered to her face, as if she's secretly planning something, that smile that she usually has when she's up to no good. At the back of my mind, I got so scared, what if my teenager has a boy friend already. When she got into the car, she kissed me hello, still with that grin on her face.

Anak, you seem very happy.

Oh, I am. She said in sing song.

Is it about a boy? I couldn't stop myself.

What of course not, I just got back. I don't have time yet to meet potential boyfriends if that's what you're worried about. I knew it, my child really is a mind reader, too bad that I'm not.

She started messing around with my car audio, she connected her phone, the car started playing our song.

Remember this papa?

How can I forget? It's our song.

We used to sing that song, every time it was just her and I in the car, running errands for Dawn, or when we Dawn up from taping.

I like that you're happy anak, I'm happy, that you're happy.

I am too. She's starting to warm up to me again. And that makes me happy.

We reach Papa's house, and as if waiting for his apo at the doorstep. He welcomed her with open arms. Apo ko! What are we going to do today?

Well that's up to you Lolo, I'm here to spend time with my favorite Lolo in the universe.

Bolera Talaga apo ko. Of course I'm your favorite, wala ka nang Ibang choice. Why don't we eat lunch first. I cooked your favorite lengua, though it may not be the same as what your Lola Remi makes, but I followed the recipe well.

After lunch the three of us went to grab dessert at our favorite ice cream parlor. Ako taya dito pa. And I know na what to order.

I ordered one banana split and a sugar free Avocado ice cream for papa.

I get chocolate. She called.

Akin ang vanilla. Then we both just stared at each other, no ones taking the strawberry, Dawn's flavor.

Why don't we just spit it papa? She offered.

Whatever you want anak. I smiled.

Ava started telling her Lolo her success stories on her achievements in school.

Oo Nga pala apo, since you're starting showbiz, how will you continue college?

Well Lolo, they made my schedule pretty flexible. But they made work fit in school, and not the other way around.

We finished up, and headed to Mama's grave.

Lola!! I'm back! Sorry I haven't visited in so long. But I have loads of kwento. Lolo made pala your lengua recipe, it's good, but not as good as yours.

Aba! Itong apo ko.

I placed the flowers on her grave. Oh ma, andito na ulit apo niyo, makulet pa din. Pero ang importante andito siya. Ava gave me a hug and said, and I'm not going anywhere.

That evening after we dropped off her Lolo, we started to head back to their house.

Thank you for today papa, I had fun.

Me too, thank you also anak.

Mas masaya Sana Kung kasama si mama.

Oo Nga eh. Anak?

Yes pa?

Actually, nevermind.

We reached the gate of the house.

Hatid na kita.

Wag na pa. I'm good.

Are you sure?

Yes big girl na po ako. And pa?

Yes anak?

No, she never had a boyfriend, or anyone for that matter. Love you papa, see you. She kissed me goodnight and went inside.

I was left there dumbfounded, my child really knows me. But somehow, there's a smile plastered on my face, and I can't get it off.
