"...all my fault!"

"How many times do I have to tell you it's not, Squall?!"

"Stop calling me that! It's my fault Zack isn't here to celebrate his birthday with us."

You stumbled down the hall, rubbing your eyes. You woke up from their shouting and wanted to know what all the ruckus was about. "Cloud? Leon?"

They were standing at opposite ends of the room, both breathing heavy and shoulders tensed from shouting. They looked at you and their expressions softened, looking slightly guilty.

"Oh, sorry [Name]. We didn't mean to wake you," Cloud said.

"Why were you shouting? Who's Zack?"

They exchanged a look and Leon left abruptly. He slammed the door to his room and you turned to Cloud for an answer.

"Zack... was one of our friends. It would have been his birthday today..."

"Oh," you said, suddenly very awake. "I'm so sorry..."

Cloud shook his head. "Just be prepared if everyone is acting different today. We all took it pretty hard." Cloud swallowed, looking choked up. "He was my best friend."

Without hesitating, you stepped forward and hugged him. He stood still for a second, seemingly unsure to hug back, but eventually he wrapped his arms around you. There was nothing romantic about it, just one person trying to help another person during a hard time. You felt him shaking slightly and hugged him tighter once more before letting him go. You kept your head down, doing your best not to see his misty eyes, and started back to your room.

"[Name]?" he called.

You stopped without turning around to look at him. "Yes?"

"Thank you."

You smiled to yourself and went back to your room to get ready for the day.

You, Kairi, and Naminé had been training in Hollow Bastion for a few weeks now. You had all gotten fairly decent in fighting. Though you had your poi, Kairi was still using the borrowed sword until she found her weapon. Naminé had been working on her magic and found her sketches could be used to fight. They explained something about "summons" but you weren't sure what exactly that means. What you got out of it was that she can summon creatures to help her fight and take damage, though she is vulnerable without them. You and Kairi vowed to protect her of course.

You, Kairi, and Naminé were sparring against Cloud, Yuffie, and Aerith. You three were doing well but they were so distracted, the training wasn't very beneficial. After you landed another blow to Yuffie, you stopped.

"Let's take a break, okay?" you suggested. They nodded at you and walked to the bench to get water.

Kairi and Naminé got closer to you and looked at you concerned.

"What's wrong?" Kairi asked.

You explained what you heard this morning as their faces fell.

"Oh... That's terrible, I'm sorry," Naminé said, glancing at them. "Maybe we should stop for the day."
