Kevin walked slowly to the door. He took his time as he reached the last step of his team owner's private jet. The cab driver was patiently awaiting his arrival at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport.
Kevin entered the cab, "Please take me to Barnes Jewish Hospital."
The cab driver said, "No problem. We are only thirty minutes away."
Kevin rummaged through his phone, answered a couple of emails, replied to a few text messages and sat back in the taxi cab observing the scenery. It had been close to twelve years since he had been home. It brought back to many countless memories. He was haunted by painful memories from his childhood. As much as he wanted to forget them, they continue to taunt him every since he was a child.
Just as Kevin was about to drift way in his painful memories, they had arrived at his destination.
"We are here!" the cab driver announced.
Kevin paid his fare and tipped the driver. He left the backseat of the cab expeditiously. He threw his black leather book bag on his back and headed towards the main entrance of Barnes Jewish Hospital.
As he entered the hospital he took a deep breath. He was dressed in an all black Adidas track suit with black and white Samoa Adidas to match.
Once through the door all the painful memories surfaced. Something had him at a standstill. He looked around and saw the sign which read Patient Information. Just as he was about to take a step he was bombarded by his the fans he didn't know he still had.
"Kevin McClain!" was what a crowd was chanting. They surrounded him wanted autographs. Kevin smiled and began to sign everything from cleavage to paper.
Coming home had his mocha-latte complexion standing taller than six foot three. That forgotten feeling was replenished. He hadn't felt like that in a long time. Six months ago his wife had him back in the headlines like the day he entered the NBA. Although, his popularity had resurfaced behind his wife's misfortune in all the headline news and today her hospitalization was helping with his ego, as he was feeling like the hometown hero he once was. Kevin chit chatted about his future with the NBA with someone who paid attention to his stats since his high school years. One fan told him, "If they trade you go, but they have been holding on to you for some reason."
Kevin smiled and thought to himself, he played a lot more in the game the last season. When the upcoming season arrived he was going to make his fans and hometown proud. He was going to show them that he still had love for the game.
He finally made it over to the receptionist area. "Can you please tell me what room Diamond McClain is in?"
The receptionist handed him visitor's pass. She then handed him the map with the room number, showing him what directions he would be taking to get to the room.
Kevin waited on the elevator. As he waited he was tormented with the thoughts of the hurt Diamond could be undergoing. He found some relief when the arrow light lit up and the dinging of the elevator sounded off.
On the elevator Kevin was alone. He watched the numbers light up as the elevator passed each floor. He finally reached floor 11 and the doors opened. He stepped off the elevator not knowing whether to walk or run. As he walked he wondered to himself, what would be Diamond's reaction be when she saw his face. He wasn't pleased that she had left him. He had phoned the police after eight hours of her not coming home. He was informed that he had to wait a total of twenty-four hours before they could take the report and they list her as a missing person. He was hesitant in the beginning because he didn't want any more bad press. On day two he had made his police report. He didn't want to alarm Diane, so he never attempted to call her, letting her know it had been a while since he had even talked to Diamond.
He thought she was still in the Denver area and at a hotel. He didn't appear to him that she had taken anything from her closet. Kevin thought, when she calmed down she would eventually come back home. He knew she had to be a little upset, about finding out the news of his child.
Kevin could hear the laughter as he approached the room. He walked in and all the conversation ceased. The laughter had come to a halt. He felt the tension.
Kevin looked at Diane and Tiffany sitting at the foot of the hospital bed. He turned noticing a new face sitting in the chair right next to his wife.
Diane stood up and walked over to embrace him. She began to speak, "Hey, Kev. You didn't tell me you were coming. I told you everything was okay. I just needed a little information."
Kevin listened but couldn't take his eyes of Andrew. He had seen him before, but he couldn't place it.
Tiffany stood up to greet him, never taking her eyes off Diamond. Diamond smile suddenly became a frown and she turned her head back to the window. Kevin had notice the look of disgust on his wife's face.
Andrew walked over to Kevin reaching for his hand, "Kevin McClain, our hometown hero."
A short stubby nurse entered the room, "Hey Mrs. McClain, I'm sorry but visiting hours are now over."
