present day
when kodie saw the drop ship fall from the sky she wanted to go right after it, but lincoln told her no. it had been three days and kodie was still prying.
"em's nou klir." he said, tossing water at the fire he had made from the night before. it was mid-day now and they were in lincoln's cave.
"nothing is safe." kodie rolls her eyes.
"shof op." he scoffs.
"shof op." the seventeen year old mocks. "you never let me do anything."
he shakes his head, grabbing his spear. "ste hir."
"do i have a choice?" she mumbles under her breath as he leaves the cave. she picks a rock up from the floor and tossed it across the room before standing up and walking over to her weapons. she still had the knife her dad had given her three years before and lincoln had taught her how to make spears. though she wanted to learn how to make a bow and arrows the grounder refused to teach her.
she puts her knife in her belt loop before grabbing her backpack and a spear. she made sure the coast was clear before stepping outside the cave. she looked around at her surroundings and let out a small sigh before running through the woods in the direction she had seen the drop ship fall. as she wandered through the woods she made sure to check her surroundings a lot incase a grounder was near, including lincoln because he will be beyond pissed when he finds out that she left.
when lincoln had found her he brought her back to his cave and aided her injuries from the fall. he taught her his language and the ways of the ground. since she was a sky girl she was set for death. sky people were considered a threat and no one wanted them here. she had only met one other person during her three years on the ground and his name was nyko. he was lincoln's best friend and also a healer just like him. they taught her the ways of a doctor and many other important things like hunting and how to survive.
as she came across a pile of mud she bent down, scooping it up and spreading it on her cheeks so that she blended in with the woods more. it also protected her incase she came across a grounder because she could easily pretend to be one of them considering she knew their tactics and spoke their language.
she walked for miles before finally hearing faint chatter. could that be her people? "houm." she mumbles quietly.
"no houm."
she spun around and glared at lincoln. "you can't keep me from my people, lincoln."
"ai'm jos trana shil yu op." he states.
"i can protect myself." she turns back to the noise. "gonot nau."
"you know where i am." he shakes his head before walking away.
kodie gives him a nod even though he couldn't see it and makes her way towards the noise again. her eyes widened at the sight of the drop ship and she stood still, watching as people were building a wall out of sticks and extra parts from the drop ship that fell off.
an arm wrapped around kodie's neck and a blade was pressed to her throat. "don't move."
she furrowed her eyebrows, knowing she had heard that voice before. "skrish." she huffs before swallowing, feeling the blade press further to her skin. "please."
"you speak english?" he asks.
"why wouldn't i?" she retorts, causing the guy to tighten his grip around her neck.
"i don't appreciate the attitude." he snaps.
as kodie's grip on the man's wrist tightened she licked her lips, speaking slowly. "ai nou fir raun." she swung her leg back, knocking the boy right in the balls before pulling his arm away from her neck and switching their positions so that she had the boy's arm to his stomach and pushed him against a tree. she quickly retrieved her knife from her belt and held it to the boy's neck, examining his frightened expression.
the grip of the blade in her hand was tight, but she wasn't pressing it to his neck. as her eyes scanned over his face she loosened her grip more and her breathing was shaky. "finn?"
the boy furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, looking at the girl and as his eyes widened in realisation as to who was standing in front of him. he pushed her blade away from his face and stood up straight. "kodie?"
kodie's eyes began to water as she dropped her knife to the ground and threw her arms around one of her best friends that she hadn't seen in years. "i almost didn't recognise you with all the mud on your face." finn says once they've pulled away. "plus, you've gotten much older."
"so have you." she points out. "your hair is very long."
"yeah," he chuckles. "i've been in a cell for awhile and now i'm on the ground."
"in a cell?" she raises an eyebrow. "what the hell did you do?"
"that's not important." he shakes his head. "what's important is that you've been on the ground for three years and you're alive. how the hell are you alive?"
she furrows her eyebrows, "what do you mean?"
"the grounders." he eyes her. "how did you survive with the grounders?"
she licks her lips, knowing she probably shouldn't give up lincoln. "practice, i guess? i just avoid them at all costs and i've been okay."
"you must be a complete badass to survive that long with them." he laughs, nudging her shoulder before raising an eyebrow. "wait a second, you spoke a different language before."
"oh," she bites the inside of her cheek. "i overheard a grounder say it to a new warrior and they said it meant something about being fearless?" she thought she was playing it off well. "i kinda just started saying it for encouragement."
"oh, cool." he gives her a small smile. "i just can't believe you've been alive all this time. everyone was sure you were dead."
"yeah," she mumbles. "i was sure i was dead too."
"you've got to come to camp. you don't have to be on your own anymore." he grabs her biceps.
she ignored his statement. "how many of you are there?"
"well, there was a hundred, but two died on the way down here and one is severely injured from a grounder spearing him in the chest." he says.
her eyes widen, "what?"
he nods, "yeah, we were trying to find mount weather and—"
"mount weather?" she shakes her head quickly. "mount weather is bad news."
"what? why?" he furrows his eyebrows.
"it just is, okay? stay away from mount weather." she orders before running her fingers through her hair. she picked up her knife from the ground and slipped it into her belt loop before grabbing her spear that had dropped to the ground. "bring me to the boy that got speared."
