New Beginnings

(Damian’s POV)

When I woke up, the sun blazed in my eyes through the crack in the curtains. I sat up to look around with a stretch, and stood from the bed. Looking around the room, I noticed nothing out of the ordinary, and headed out into the hallway to find the kitchen as my stomach rumbled.

I began the long trek to the kitchen, and, to my hatred, the walls rotated. Think about the moving staircases from Harry Potter, and apply them to hallways and walls. I punched the wall in frustration and left a large dent in the black stone. Like everything else in this house, it mended back together as if nothing had harmed it. I growled tiredly and turned down the new hallway.

Making it to the kitchen door at last, I noticed that Lauren’s portrait had been replaced by the Council’s. Oh the sweet irony of this damned house. I entered the kitchen and the scent of bacon and eggs overwhelmed me.

“Good morning, Master Damian! So much for not falling asleep, eh?” Jack held out a plate of food and I frowned at him as I took it. I set it down at the island and began eating without looking to see who else was present. “’Mornin, Damian. Don’t mind me, it’s not like I woke up in your bed or anything.” Raven sat at the table glaring at me angrily and I returned eating without answering her. To be honest, I had forgotten about her.

“Ah, just like at school. You see, Jack? This is what he does all day long.” Jack laughed quietly and I still ignored her. She laughed sarcastically and went back to her breakfast.

I finished my bacon and eggs and Jack took my plate out of the way. After he placed it in the sink, he leaned to my ear. “I told her.” I growled, “You told her what?” He shrugged. “Just that she’s a familiar and that you’re her master?” My anger took over and I punched the counter. “You did what?!”

Jack backed away from me quickly, “I-I’m sorry, Master Damian. She wanted to know why she was here, so I told her.” I took a deep breath, “Do not ever say anything about it ever again. Do you hear me?” He nodded and bowed. I looked over to see that Raven had left during the fight. “Damn.”

(Raven’s POV)

As Damian barked at Jack, I snuck past the two and ran out of the kitchen. Where was I planning to go, anyways? It’s not like I know where I’m going. I picked the closest hall and ran down it.

The farther I ran, the longer and darker the hallway seemed to become. Before I gave up, a door appeared out of absolutely nowhere. Sometimes I think that hallways and doors move, but my theory hasn’t been proven yet.

I opened the red cherry wood door and entered. I flipped on the light, and nearly fell on my ass in awe. The largest library I’ve ever seen in my life. “Where have you been all my life?” Someone laughed and I whipped around to find the source. Nothing.

“Who are you?! Where are you?!” Another laugh. I checked down all of the shelved isles and still found it empty. Giving up, I slumped to the floor and put my head in my lap. I’m going insane. “No, you’re not, familiar.”

It was a woman’s voice, but I still couldn’t locate it. As I still sat there, I felt a hand brush my shoulder. I looked up and was greeted by a blinding smile and the darkest green eyes I’ve ever seen. Her red hair was chopped short to her ears and her lipstick matched the red of her hair.

She knelt beside me and hugged me to her. “What’s the matter, child?” I shook my head, “Nothing, if you include the fact that I just woke up beside a boy I hardly know, and now he’s supposed to be my ‘master’.” She nodded knowingly. “I’m Sara Athena. Who are you?” Sara? I’ve never heard of her. “Raven Mathews. Are you Damian or Rose’s familiar too?” She laughed loudly, “No, no, no! I’m their oldest sister.” Oldest sister?! “Yes. Even though we don’t have the same name, we’re relatives. You really are new, aren’t you?”

She squinted her eyes and examined me more closely. “You remind me of someone, but I don’t remember who.” I shrugged and pretended not to know, but she caught on quickly as her eyes widened. “Lauren Williams! But wait a minute. If you’re Lauren’s reincarnation, then you must be Damian’s familiar, yes?” I frowned and nodded.

She let out an angry giggle and it frightened me a bit. “That sly bastard!” I tried to scoot away from her and she grabbed my wrist roughly making me gasp in pain. “Oh, no ya don’t! When the Council hears about this, they’ll have his head for sure, and I can’t wait to see the look on that brat’s face when they do!”

She stood up and yanked me to my feet. As she opened a door that I hadn’t noticed before, the door to the library blasted into splinters and I had to shield my face from the debris.

“Let her go, Sara!” She turned to the enraged Damian with a smirk. “Or what, brat? You’re going to tell Rose?” I noticed Damian shaking in rage and Sara tightened her grip as I fell to my knees in pain.

“I said let. Her. Go.” Sara twisted my wrist backwards and I screamed as I heard bones snap. Through the tears, I saw Damian run at Sara and she was knocked backwards and I slumped to the floor cradling my broken wrist.

Someone picked me up from the floor carefully and rushed me out of the room as the two siblings continued to fight. I tried to look up at who was carrying me, but my head swam in pain. “Hang in there, kid.” Sebastian, maybe? I sighed in relief and closed my eyes. Oh what a beautiful day.
