~~Chapter 35~~

"Could you describe the man who attacked you?" The police officer asked. I nodded.

"He had dark brown hair, he was a couple of inches taller than me, and he probably weighed about 200 pounds." I told him. "He was wearing a big green coat, too." I added. The police officer nodded, writing down the details on his notebook.

"Thank you very much, Destiny. I suggest you have someone to stay with you tonight. We'll send some officers down to the area to check things out, alright?" I nodded.

"Alright."

He smiled, then walked over to another police officer and talked to him.

As I walked upstairs, I recalled tonight's events. Tears stung my eyes as I remembered Sam's car not being there. Well, there's no way I'm ever going on a date again. I slid my key into the door and opened it.

"Excuse me, I believe I told you to have her home by ten." Zach called from the couch. He turned to me and frowned when he saw I was crying.

"What happened?" He asked, rushing over to me.

"I had a bad night." I told him, taking off my jacket and setting it over my desk chair. At least it was warmer in here. "Why are you still in my room? You didn't leave while I was gone?" I asked him, sniffling.

"I wanted to wait for you and Sam. Where is he anyway?" I turned away and took my shoes off.

"Sam's a big jerk. He left me at the restaurant." I told him. His eyes widened.

"He left you? I'll kill him." I shook my head.

"That wasn't even the worst part." I said. "I had to walk home in the snow, and I got lost. Then I-"

There was a knock on my door, and I went to open it.

"Destiny," The police officer said. "We found 3 unconscious men in the alley you were talking about. Can you identify them as your attackers?" He asked, handing me 3 pictures.

I looked through all 3, recognizing each face.

"Yes, these were the ones." I told him. He nodded, then saw Zach.

"Excuse me sir, are you a friend of Destiny's" He asked.

"Yeah." He said, stepping closer to the door.

"Do you mind staying with Destiny tonight? We don't want her alone after tonight's events."

Zach nodded. "Sure, that's fine."

The police officer nodded in thanks, then walked away.

"Destiny, what happened tonight?" Zach asked me. My eyes started to water again.

"Well after I left the diner, I was walking home, but I got lost. Then some guys stole my purse and tried to... You know..."

"They tried to WHAT?" Zach yelled. I jumped back a little bit, not expecting him to yell.

"It was okay though, Zach! A guy beat them up for me. Then he knocked them out with tranquilizer darts." I told him quickly, not wanting him to yell anymore. His shoulders relaxed.

"Who?" He asked. "Who saved you?" I shook my head.

"Um, I didn't see his face. He was wearing a ski mask." I told him. "He was really sweet. When he walked me home he gave me his jacket and everything. I guess he was my knight in shining armor tonight." I told him, smiling at the cheesy part about the knight in shining armor.

He smiled too, but his smile faded when another tear fell down my cheek. He walked over to me slowly and wrapped his arms around my body, hugging me. I lifted my arms to rest around his neck, but quickly pulled away.

"Zach, you're freezing!" I told him, touching his arm. "Why didn't you put a blanket on?" I asked.

He shrugged. "I was too lazy to get up." He said. I pushed him towards the couch, then sat him down. I got a blanket from the rack next to my bed and wrapped it around him. Then I pulled a pillow off of my bed and handed it to him.

"Thanks." He said. I sat down next to him, then felt his arm. He was still a little cold, but he was warmer than he was a minute ago.

"Destiny, you don't need to use my body heat as an excuse to feel my muscles." He said, trying to cheer me up. I smiled a little and wiped away a stray tear. He put his arm around me and stroked my arm, comforting me.

"I'm sorry about what happened tonight. I'll give you my phone number. That way you can call me if you're ever in a bad situation." He whispered. I nodded.

"I don't think Sam and I will be going out again." I told him. Zach sighed, then hugged me closer to him.

"I didn't want you going out with him anyway. But after hearing about what he did to you, I'm going to kill him." He said.

"Yes, please do." I told him. "I just don't understand why he did it. Yes, I was nervous and stuttering, but I didn't think I was that bad." I said, leaning onto his shoulder. I could do that now since he wasn't dating Jessica anymore, but it took a lot of courage, and my heart rate picked up. Zach sighed.

"There's nothing wrong with you. Sam's just an idiot." He said as he rested his head on top of mine.

Alright, pretty soon I was going to die of a heart attack.

Zach grabbed the remote with his other hand and flipped the TV back on. So much for our moment. He started to flip through the channels until we finally settled on just the news. The volume was turned down a little, and Zach turned off the light next to him. My eyes were getting tired, and I was about to fall asleep.

"Zach, I'm going to go to sleep, okay?"

He nodded, then pulled me closer to him. "Okay." He replied. I started to get up, but Zach wouldn't let me go.

"Zach, I'm tired and upset. Please let me go to bed." I told him.

He sighed, then let me go. I went to the bathroom to change into my pajamas and brush my teeth, then walked to my bed and crawled under the covers. I looked at Zach, who was lying under his blanket on the couch.

"Do you need anything?" I asked him. He shook his head.

"No. But I want YOU to let me know if you need anything." He said.

"Okay." a few minutes later, Zach turned off the TV, and I heard him roll over on the couch.

"Goodnight." He said.

"Goodnight." I replied, falling asleep.

I woke up in the middle of the night, afraid. I had a dream about the guys in the alley attacking me again. I looked over at Zach on the couch. Should I wake him up? I really shouldn't, but he said to let him know if I needed anything. I finally decided to get up, knowing that I needed...Zach. I stood up and walked over to him. He was really cute when he was sleeping. I just stared at him like a creeper for a minute until I touched his shoulder with my hand.

"Zach." I said softly, shaking him just a little bit. He made a soft grunt, then opened his eyes. He saw me, then sat up against the back of the couch.

"What's wrong?" He asked, worried. I looked down, realizing that it was a bad idea to wake him.

"I...I had a bad dream." I told him, looking down at my feet. He smiled a little, then grabbed my hand and pulled me down next to him. He put his arm around me and pulled me against his side so I was leaning on him, and he rested his head on mine again.

"It's alright, Destiny. It was only a dream." He said, rubbing my back. "I won't let anything like that ever happen to you again."

I smiled to myself, knowing that Zach wasn't annoyed by me waking him up. I slowly closed my eyes and fell asleep to him rubbing my back.
