It was November. Nana and Charles decided to spend Thanksgiving Day with me and my family in Los Angeles. Our house wasn't very big but it was enough for five people. It was a one-storey house equipped with three bedrooms: a master's bedroom, a guestroom, and my bedroom. There were two beds in the guestroom so that would be okay for Nana and Charles to stay in.
When I told my parents through Skype that I had a boyfriend, they were both excited.
"My little princess is all grown up," mom said.
"Mom, are you crying?" Mom looked pretty emotional as she fanned her eyes.
"Just don't forget to get a degree, sweetheart," reminded my dad.
"Yes dad."
"We miss you so much sweetie," cried my mom. I actually felt homesick. I could feel tears building up my eyes.
"Mom, stop. You're making me cry."
"Yes Kym. Stop it, you're making her cry," dad repeated. He then turned his back to the camera, hugged mom, and started sobbing. Mom then rubbed his back and lulled, "There, there Robert." After she kissed my father's forehead, she added, "Stop crying. You're embarrassing yourself in front of our daughter." I couldn't stop laughing. That just reminded me how much I loved my parents.
Dad finally faced the camera. His cheeks were still wet.
"Oh my god! Look at your face Robert. You look ugly," mom said as she wiped the tears on his red cheeks.
My dad spoke, "Remind me again why you're my wife, Kym?"
"I cook you meals," mom answered. I laughed once again.
"Mom, dad, I'm still here," I called back their attention.
"Yes we know dear. Please come home soon. See you at Thanksgiving!" mom said.
I asked them, "Is it okay if I invite Charles and his Aunt Emily?"
"Of course! We'd like to finally meet the guy!" dad replied.
Here we were travelling to Los Angeles in a bus. I was so excited as opposed to Charles who was so nervous. I had been telling him to just be himself but even that couldn't ease him. We finally arrived at our house and my parents were already waiting at the doorstep. I immediately ran towards them and hugged mom first, then dad. Nana and Charles let us had a family moment for a while. I then pulled back from my parents' hugs and kisses to introduce to them my companions.
"Mom, dad, this is Nana and Charles."
Mom went towards Nana and they both gave each other kisses on the cheeks. Dad moved towards Charles and gave each other a handshake.
"Welcome to our humble home," said mom as she ushered us into the house.
Charles and I put our bags into our respective bedrooms. I looked at him and he was sweating because of nervousness.
"I hope the room is okay," I said.
He turned towards me, wiping the sweat on his forehead, "How did I do?"
I gave him a quick kiss on the lips and assured him saying, "You're doing great. For the nth time, just be yourself." I kissed him once again.
We went back to the living room. I let Charles sat beside my dad on the couch in the living room. Dad was watching Animal Planet. He always loved that channel. I went to the kitchen to help mom prepare for dinner.
