Chapter five
I hit the steering wheel of my car as hard as I could before getting out and feeling the cold air touch my skin. I followed the sounds of Gloria’s voice, which was muttering things I did not understand. Eventually I came to a small shed type house, smaller than the others that were poorly built around it.
It had no door, simply an old blanket in its place. It waved back and forth in the cold breeze. As it flickered up I saw a light and Gloria’s feet pacing.
I entered the shed house quietly, so quietly in fact that she hadn’t heard me. It took her a good few more minutes of pacing before noticing my presence.
“What the fuck are you gawking at?” Gloria’s hand was still bleeding, so much so you could see blood patches seeping through the bandage.
I looked around the one roomed ‘home’ I was in and saw my bag. “Why do you have my bag?” I asked, genuinely curious.
“You weren’t going to listen to me and leave were you?” She laughed without humour before sitting down on the floor in front of a torch that had a powerful light. The whole room glowed an oddly calming yellow colour.
Gloria looked exhausted; her blood shot eyes looked up at me as if expecting me to announce some break-through idea to get her - well, us - out of this mess. I walked over to my bag and pulled out a large red jumper. I sat beside her and placed it on her lap.
“It’s freezing, put it on, you must be cold.” I said while looking at the thin white shirt and black yoga pants. She nodded and put it over her head. It was a little too big for her but she seemed to like that, her entire face seemed to change, a small smile began dancing the corners of her lips. Gloria seemed to be content.
“You really should go, y’know kid, this isn’t something you should have to deal with. Putting your neck on the line for a girl you don’t know is…idiotic.” Suddenly and quiet apprehensively, she put her hand on my knee. “But I kind of…want you to stay.”
“So you don’t hate me?” I said in a half mocking, half serious tone.
She squeezed my knee before pushing my leg slightly. “Listen, tomorrow we need to drive and see Jimmy. I’ll tell him what’s happened…no-one will come after you, it’ll be done.”
“Really it’s that easy? We stay at a shitty motel that gets shot up, almost get killed in the process and all that we need to never have that happen again, is one word, one word from Jimmy?”
She looked at me with a slightly raised eyebrow. “You sound surprised?”
“Is he really so powerful that he can stop a gang from killing his girlfriend and her driver with one word?” I watched as she bit her tongue and looked down at the floor.
Gloria simply nodded and then she stood up and walked over to her own bag and began pulling out various things I did not recognise.
