(a/n: mahiru's surname here is "hyakuya" bc it'd be weird if shinya was buying an engagement ring from his stepsister. basically this is an au where mahiru isnt a hiragi so just a heads up)

"I think you should buy a good ol' diamond engagement ring," says Guren as he scans the rest of the jewelry inside the glass display case intently.

Shinya could only sigh at his friend's mediocre suggestion. Sure, diamond rings were the standard gemstone for an engagement ring, but you —you were far from standard, and he believed that you should only get a ring that would match your otherworldly and amazing self.

"But (Name)-chan is more valuable than a diamond! I have to get her something with more meaning."

His black-haired friend could only give him that signature are-you-kidding-me look. "Shinya, I know (Name) means the whole world to you, but she couldn't possibly be worth more than a diamond."

"Hey, you guys need help?"

Guren was the first to shift his attention to the lilac-haired woman about their age, who entered the jewelry shop. Her hair reached past her waist, and she was wearing.... a school uniform?

"I'm sorry for interrupting. My name's Mahiru, and I work here," she greets with a soft smile.

Shinya raised an eyebrow. "Why'd you leave a shop with this kind of merchandise unattended?"

Mahiru gave him a sheepish look. "Well, I was on break. But fret not, my other co-worker Mika is probably sleeping behind the counter."

"Wha—"

"Wow. There was someone in here," Guren announces as he peered over the counter to see a blond boy dozing off with a magazine propped on his face. "I thought we could just grab anything we liked."

Mahiru let out a soft giggle, which, Shinya had noticed, made Guren the slightest bit red-faced. Then, she made her way behind the counter, smacked the sleeping boy, Mika, into awareness, and flashed Shinya and Guren another smile.

"Let me introduce myself again. I'm Mahiru Hyakuya, and this is my cousin, Mika Hyakuya. Welcome to Hyakuya Jewels, how can we serve you?" Mahiru says with a cheery voice. Although, Mika didn't quite share the same sentiments like she did.

"I'm looking for an engagement ring for my girlfriend," Shinya explains.

"Why are you wearing a school uniform?" Guren asks, and Shinya elbows him for it.

For a second time, Mahiru giggles, and Guren blushes. Shinya made sure to take note of this, and have a good conversation with his friend after this over some coffee. "It's kinda my thing, you see."

"Cosplaying?"

"Pretty much. Anyway, what kind of ring do you want, uhm," Mahiru trails off.

"Shinya Hīragi," he smiles at her.

"Well, Hīragi-san, would you like a gold, knotted ring, a ring with a specific gemstone, the typical diamond ring, or is there anything specific you have in mind?"

"Well, this stupid friend of mine told me to get a diamond, but that hardly ever has meaning now, since diamond rings are typical. I think I want a gemstone that has more meaning?"

Mahiru hums for a moment before tapping Mika's shoulder, and whispers something in his ear. Without losing that apathetic expression on his face, he nodded brusquely and went behind a door that probably lead to where they stored most of their jewels.
