He had been coming by every day for the last month and each day his attire flickered from overdressed to Wallstreet broker. She was convinced the man did not own any regular clothing.
Gossip had begun to spread around him. The mysterious handsome man who no one could figure out.
The shop had been packed because of it. People, primarily women, flooded in and out with the hope of getting a glance at the man or even preferably a date.
Eden couldn't really be upset, she was getting a lot of business. People came in and bought simple things but those small items did add up.
She had tried to talk to the man on occasion but all he ever did was stare at her or smirk. And whenever she rung him up he gave her big bills and never wanted his change back. She was getting a little frustrated with him but since he never wanted to talk to her she decided to play his game as well.
It was a cool day, the sun was out but a gentle breeze was present. She flipped the CLOSED sign to OPEN and smoothed down her apron. She moved around the shop, fixing things that were out of place. The doorbell chimed and she looked up, moving toward the front of the shop.
She was surprised to find Travis, Mrs. Walker's grandson, standing at the door. She hadn't seen him in what felt like forever.
"Travis?" She said with a smile as she walked toward him.
His eyes fell on her and he grinned. Travis Walker was a good looking guy. He was light skinned and rocked a perfectly cut goatee. He was tall and had a nice smile and he had been pursuing Eden since high school. She had never truly been interested in him in a way that was not platonic and constantly made that known. Still, the man was very persistent.
"Eden, baby, what's good?" He said as he took a step toward her, his arms open wide. She didn't deny him the hug he sought even though he squeezed her a little too tight.
"I'm good, what about you? It's been a while, huh?"
"You missed me? My grandma told me you been looking out for me. I knew you would come around." He mumbled as he invaded her space.
She took a step back, "Um...no, I haven't been checking for you, Travis. I don't know what your grandmother has been telling you but its not true."
He continued to walk toward her, his footsteps purposeful, his eyes blank.
She moved back at every step he took, growing nervous at the empty look in his eyes. She hit the shelves behind her, trapped. Travis stepped up to her, a weird darkness shrouding his face. He was terrifying. It was almost as if he were an empty shell, a toy soldier being controlled by an invisible force.
He reached for her, roughly yanking her against his chest. She threw punches at him but it did not seem to deter him in the least.
His voice was gravelly as he said, "I've always wanted you, Eden."
His grip on her tightened and she shrieked as he pushed her back up against the shelf, knocking down little ornaments and wind catchers.
She screamed when he leaned close to her, running his tongue across her neck. She pounded on his back and dug her nails into his skin but he did not react. Just when she thought she was liable to be raped a large warm hand gabbed her arm and yanked her from in between Travis and the shelf. She gasped as she found herself wrapped in strong arms. She glanced up to find that she was wrapped in the arms of the mystery man himself.
He glanced at her for a moment before bringing his eyes to Travis. Travis stood there, staring blankly at the shelf.
Eden watched him anxiously as he continued to stare at the shelf, his eyes not truly focused on anything.
The man holding her pushed her behind him and walked over to where Travis stood. She watched as he grabbed Travis by the neck.
Eden gasped, taking a step forward, "What are you doing?"
He ignored her completely, before whispering something to Travis. He removed his hand from around his neck and stepped back. Travis leaned forward before shaking violently, his eyes rolling to the back of his head.
Eden screamed, he looked as if he were being possessed. He turned in her direction and made a beeline for her. She didn't have time to think straight, she was so scared she tripped over her own feet. She fell onto her butt on the hardwood floor, her eyes as wide as saucers.
"Stop, leave and once you get home you'll go to sleep. You won't remember any of this." Travis froze and began to walk toward the door as if he hadn't just tried to attack her seconds before.
Eden watched him go, her chest heaving, her heart pounding in her ears.
The man suddenly sighed, catching her attention. She looked up at him and he frowned.
His face scrunched up. "Damn it, sweet heart. I was hoping you could control yourself for a little bit longer. But I see that's not the way things are going to be."
He flicked his wrist toward the door and it clicked as the lock turned. Her eyes nearly fell out of their sockets. He pointed a finger toward the OPEN sign and it flipped over to CLOSED.
Her mouth fell open in disbelief. She rubbed at her eyes before turning to look at him. She pointed to the door, "D-d-did y-you do that?"
He raised a brow, a smirk growing on his lips. "I guess now would be the time to introduce myself." He wrapped an arm behind his back and placed a hand on his chest before bowing slightly. "My name is Kane and I am here to protect you until your twenty-fifth birthday."
She struggled onto her feet, taking large steps back. Inching away from him.
"I don't know what kind of sick ass game you're playing but I'm not interested." She said seriously.
He frowned, scrunching his nose up again, almost as if to say she stunk. She would have took offense if she wasn't so confused and terrified.
"This isn't a game, sweet heart. I was assigned to protect you. I have a mission to carry out and you're it."
She shook her head. "Why do I need protection? How did you... do that? What was wrong with Travis? Why was he acting that way? What are you? Am I dreaming? Oh my lord I'm losing my mind... I miss my grandpa so much I'm starting to hallucinate."
He crossed his arms, tilting his head at her. "Are you done?"
She glanced up at him, her breath catching. There was no way in hell that any of this was real.
"Listen to me, sweet heart. You're not dreaming or hallucinating. I'm very real. This situation is very real. It's obvious that you don't know what you are or who you are for that matter and so not only am I here to protect you but to teach you as well."
She stared at him, wrapping her arms around herself. "Teach me?"
He sighed, rubbing at his eyes. "This might take a while..." He mumbled, "Sweet heart, let's go. We'll talk once we're someone safe."
