"You're looking well today, honey. How are you holding up?"
Eden wiped at the slight sweat on her brow before smiling at the little old lady before her. Everyone around her had become overly emphatic after her grandfather's death. He had been her last living relative and with him gone she was seemingly alone. She ran her hands through her short haircut, her fingers slipping past her kinky straight textured hair.
"I'm fine Mrs. Wilson, thank you for asking. How are you today?" Eden said as she reached for the nearest bag, wrapping the flowers Mrs. Wilson wished to purchase up before gingerly placing them into the bag.
"Oh same old, same old dear. You have a good day and don't you hesitate to come by for dinner, baby. You know you're always welcome."
Eden waved the woman off as she headed for the door. "Thank you, I'll keep that in mind."
As the door shut behind her Eden sighed, leaning forward on the counter. It had been a long couple of weeks. After the sudden death of her grandfather she had taken over the little corner store he owned. She couldn't truly complain. Her grandfather had always been very logical in his investments and so even in his death he had made sure Eden was taken care of. He had managed to save twenty-four thousand dollars without Eden knowing and had promptly left it to her, along with the deed to her childhood home and the shop.
She was grateful but she would trade it all in to have him back. She let her eyes roam around the small little shop her grandparent's had built years before. It sold everything from flowers to junk food to small little useless trinkets. She ran a hand over the hardwood of the countertop before stepping around it and fixing the apron around her waist.
She headed for the door, walking out into the warm Mississippi sunshine. She resided in Greenville, Mississippi. It was a small town but cozy, friendly even. The weather never ceased to annoy her though she had to admit on days where she felt filled with melancholy the summer heat did help.
The warm rays of the sun cascaded over her almond colored skin and she stretched gratefully before turning her attention to the flowers growing alongside the shop. She grabbed for the watering hose and gently sprayed it along the rows of flowers. She hummed to herself quietly as she remembered doing this very thing with her grandfather. He had been a tall man with a bright smile and a friendly demeanor. His eyes had been the lightest brown she had ever seen and his voice had been deep and yet soothing to the ears. His complexion had been the same honeyed almond as her own, his cheeks bones had been high, a trait she had inherited. He had always told her to be thankful for her cheekbones. They were a symbol of her ancestry he had always said.
She had never doubted him and thus had done everything in her power to keep that smile on his face and that wisdom pouring from his lips.
"Hello Eden!" A familiar voice said beside her as several long time shoppers walked inside after waving at her.
"Hello ladies." She mumbled as she put the hose down.
She smiled at them as they went inside, the doorbell chiming behind them.
A slight breeze blew passed her and she soaked it all in as she headed for the door. She walked inside, the group of women all gossiping around the area that held the assortment of seeds. Eden shook her head, a smirk on her lips. She was used to this. They had been doing this since she was a child, coming in and buying up trinkets and seeds and standing in the corner like teenagers to gossip about the latest news.
She wiped her hands on her apron before grinning at the women. "Ya'll really shouldn't be talking about people so early in the day."
They all looked at her before laughing.
Mrs. Walker, a short woman with greying hair, ran over to her and leaned forward as if sharing a secret only she knew. "Eden, honey, I heard from my nephew, you know, Tom, the one who works at Motel 7, that a man he's never seen before came in yesterday. You know how fast news like this travels, baby and plus, at least from what my nephew told me, cause you know he's a little fruity, God bless his sugary heart, said that the man is good looking and-," she stopped talking to take a breath, "He had on a suit, and a Rolex! A Rolex! Can you believe that? Someone with money passing through Greenville."
All the other ladies nodded their heads in agreement, giddy excitement on their faces.
Eden rolled her eyes, shaking her head again. These women were something else. With how small Greenville was gossip spread faster than wild fire and even the littlest thing could be misconstrued into a big deal.
"Ya'll need to stop being so nosy." She chastised as she moved to stand behind the counter.
They all tsked at her.
Mrs. Walker placed her hands on her hips before walking up to the counter and leaning forward, "You know you a pretty lil' thang. When you gone let me set you up, baby?"
Eden sputtered in surprise. How had they gone from talking about a mysterious newcomer to her love life?
"Now Mrs. Walker, you know I'm not interested in your grandson. So you can stop asking."
"You just too pretty to be out here alone is all I'm saying and you know my grandson wants ya'. You know it won't take nothing but a word from you and he'll jump."
Eden looked up and smiled a little, she should have been used to things like this by now. People constantly trying to set her up. She had had her fair share of dates and had even had a boyfriend but things hadn't gone so well. He had tried to rush their relationship, pressuring her constantly to sleep with him and her, being the woman she had been raised to be, had promptly broken up with him before his pressuring had worked. She hadn't dated since and honestly she was in no rush to do so again. She was only twenty-four. She had her whole life ahead of her and when the time came she would eventually jump out into the dating scene again.
"I'll keep that in mind Mrs. Walker." Eden mumbled. She already had enough trouble keeping men at bay without adding another one to mix.
Ever since her grandfathers' death men had had been coming at her by the dozen. She had been asked out more within the last three weeks than in her whole entire life and recently women had been in the mix as well. She was flattered, she couldn't deny it but she was more flustered than anything else.
All the women brought up their items, though they were all still abuzz with chatter on the mystery man. She rang item after item up, occasionally pausing to talk to one of the women.
Just as she made it to the last item the doorbell chimed and all eyes fell onto the new customer.
Mrs. Walker whistled, "Well damn. Tom did not say he was that good looking."
